Jason Colson, class of 2001, was a standout baseball student-athlete who was inducted into the Big South Conference Hall of Fame in 2012. He was voted the 2000-01 Big South Male Athlete of the Year and was the 2001 Big South Baseball Player of the Year. He was a three-time All-Big South Conference selection and was a honorable mention Collegiate Baseball All-American selection in 1998. During his career, he helped lead Winthrop to two NCAA tournament appearances in 1999 and 2001. He is still the Big South Conference career home run leader with 53 and is the only player in Big South history to hit 10 or more home runs in four seasons. He still ranks among the Big South’s Top 10 leaders in eight offensive categories. He finished his career with a .319 batting average and also compiled a 11-8 pitching record. He was drafted in the seventh round of the 2001 Major League Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays and played professionally until 2009. He now teaches and coaches in Chandler, Ariz.
