She graduated from Winthrop in 1958 with a degree in physical education. She earned a name for herself during 39 years of high school coaching in North Augusta, SC, and Johnston, SC. Mrs. Bandy built a girls’ basketball dynasty at Strom Thurmond High School with a record of 277 wins and 79 losses, and led that school to two South Carolina state championships and one runner-up finish. She coached Strom Thurmond H.S. to three straight undefeated regular seasons and took that school to the state championship playoffs eight times. In 1976, she was voted the National High School Coach of the Year by the National High School Coaches Association, and was inducted into the South Carolina Athletics Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1988. Winthrop University honored her in 2000 with the College of Education Dean’s Award of Excellence for her highly regarded career. She retired from coaching and teaching in 1997.
