Hall of Fame
He was hired as Winthrop’s first baseball coach in 1978 after spending 20 years at Newberry College. During his 12 years at Winthrop, his teams won 373 games, lost 157 and tied one. Coach Turbeville compiled a 32-year baseball coaching record of 571 wins, 285 losses and one tie. He was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 2000 and the York County Sports Hall of Fame that same year. Newberry College enshrined him in its Hall of Fame in 1995. Was selected the 1972 South Carolina College Baseball Coach of the Year and was a finalist for the 1980 NAIA National Baseball Coach of the Year. He guided Winthrop’s 1981 baseball team to the NAIA College World Series where the Eagles finished as the national runner-up. In 1991 he was voted Big South Conference Coach of the Year Coach Turbeville passed away in February, 2007.
