ROCK HILL, SC – Eddie Rohan drove in a career-high five runs on Sunday afternoon as the Winthrop baseball team defeated the Marist Red Foxes 19-4 at The Winthrop Ballpark, on day three of The Bojangles Baseball Classic.
The Eagles improve to 3-0 on the season, while Marist falls to 1-2 overall with the loss.
Wade Newman (1-0) allowed only two runs (one earned), one walk and one strikeout in 6.2 innings of work, while Richard Cary earned the loss pitching 2.1 innings and gave up five runs (four earned) on four hits, two walks and two strikeouts.
"We've been swinging the bats real well, and the thing I like is that it's up and down the lineup," said head coach Joe Hudak. "It appears like we are swinging the bats the way we are capable of. We have a chance to be a pretty good offensive club."
Marist jumped out early in the top of the first inning by scoring two runs to take a 2-0 lead over Winthrop. Ryan Gauk started things off with a single to right field and moved over to third base after a single by Ricky Pacione. Pacione then went to second on a wild pitch before Bryce Nugent drove in Gauk with his RBI groundout. Nick Schwind followed by reaching on an error by Tyler Cook at second base scoring Pacione from third.
The Eagles answered back and scored three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-2 lead. Cook started the inning with a leadoff walk and went to second on a single by Tyler McBride. Both would move up a base after Eddie Rohan was hit by a pitch, and Cook would score on Chas Crane's RBI sacrifice fly to left center field. Sean Sullivan followed by driving home McBride with his RBI single, and loaded the bases again after Zak Blair was hit by a pitch. Rohan would score after Adam Gliebe forced a bases loaded walk.
Winthrop added two more runs in the third inning to increase its lead to 5-2 on RBI doubles by Crane and Zak Blair. The double by Crane that hit off the wall in right center field scored Matt Thielepape all the way from first after he began inning reaching on an error by the third baseman. Crane later scored on Blair's double down the right field line.
The Eagles broke the game open with eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to make it a 13-2 game. Rohan drove in the first three runs of the inning with his first homer of the season over the center field wall that scored Cook and McBride. Cook and McBride led off the inning with back-to-back singles prior to the home run by Rohan. Thielepape and Crane both followed with singles, and Thielepape would come home on Sullivan's RBI double. Blair then cleared the bases with his double to left center field. Tyler Donovan followed later in the inning with a single down the left field line and then scored on an RBI double by Cook.
Gliebe drove in his second run of the season in the fifth inning when he singled home Sullivan from second base. Sullivan reached on a single up the middle during his at-bat and moved to second after Blair singled to right field.
Winthrop scored five more runs in its half of the eighth to go ahead 19-2 that began with Gliebe's double to right center field and then moving to third on a wild pitch. Austen Barber then drove Gliebe in with his RBI groundout to the shortstop. Pierpont followed with a single and moved to third on a double by Taylor Lang before Rohan drove both players in with his double. Rohan would score on Crane's second double of the day. Crane moved to third after a single by Max Vogel and came home on Blair's RBI infield single.
The Red Foxes would drive in two runs off Pierpont in the top of the ninth after Richard Curylo scored on an error by Gliebe and John Prano stole home while Gauk was caught in a run-down between first and second. Curylo began the ninth with a double and advanced to third when Dan Zlotnick grounded back to Pierpont. Prano reached on a base on balls after the double by Curylo.
Crane and Blair both went 4-for-5 on the afternoon for the Eagles, while McBride and Sullivan also produced three hits each. Five different Winthrop players also had two hits.
The Eagles will wrap up the 2010 Bojangles Baseball Classic with a 4 p.m. matchup against Marist on Monday afternoon.
