Biography

2010:  Served as both an outfielder and relief pitcher during his freshman season. Hit .293 at the plate (22-for-75) with one home run and nine RBI in 43 games played with 15 starts. Also tallied eight runs scored, four doubles, 29 total bases, nine walks, one stolen base, a .387 slugging percentage and a .365 on-base percentage. On the mound, went 0-1 with a 13.50 ERA in seven relief appearances. Threw in 5.1 innings of work and gave up 10 runs (eight earned) on 10 hits, two walks and four strikeouts, while opponents hit .400 against him. Was the second Winthrop player, along with Patrick Gamblin, to hit a homer in his first collegiate at-bat, which came in his only at-bat against George Mason on Feb. 20. He started his career off with a hit in four straight contests starting against the Patriots until Feb. 28 against Wagner. Drove in a career-high two RBI in the first game of a doubleheader against Presbyterian on May 1. Would have a career-best performance against the Blue Hose on May 2 in which he went 4-for-6 at the plate, and added two doubles and one RBI. The four hits are a career-high for him. Recorded an RBI in all three games against Presbyterian from May 1-2. Had back-to-back contests driving in one RBI against High Point on Mar. 26-27. Also had one RBI against the Seahawks on Feb. 28 and Liberty on May 21. Posted one multi-hit and multi-RBI game each, and had a season-long hitting streak of five games. Pitched in a career-best 1.0 inning on three different occasions against George Mason on Feb. 20, Columbia on Mar. 19 and Kent State on Mar. 20. Struck out a season-high one batter four times against the Patriots, Harvard on Mar. 16, Coastal Carolina on May 8 and The Citadel on May 18. Did not allow a walk six of his seven appearances on the mound, and also had three scoreless appearances. Also did not allow a hit in three appearances, including his last two times pitching.

High School: 

Was named All-Conference in 2007 and 2008. Hit .436 during his junior season with nine doubles, two triples, six home runs and 22 RBI in 20 games played.

Personal:  The son of Lyn and Rosanne Vogel, Max is a Biology major who enjoys playing golf, fishing and hunting, and plans on attending medical school after graduation. His favorite foods are turkey and mashed potatoes, and Pete Rose: My Prison Without Bars is his favorite book. Ted Williams is his favorite athlete.
