ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Winthrop University outfielder
Josh Skowronski signed a free agent contract with the San Diego Padres.
Skowronski suited up with the Eagles for two seasons after joining following one season at the University of Kentucky. In 2026, Skowronski played in 57 games for Winthrop and hit .275 with a .428 on-base percentage and .471 slugging percentage. He racked up 56 hits, including 18 doubles, 2 triples, and 6 home runs, while driving in 33 runs, scoring 50 times, and drawing 48 walks against 46 strikeouts. He also stayed active on the bases, swiping 12 stolen bags on the year.
He led the Big South Conference outright in walks, good for 47th nationally, and ranked 63rd in the country in walks per game at 0.84. His 18 doubles also placed him 6th in the conference and 96th nationally among qualified hitters.
"I'm very happy for Josh, this was a goal when he stepped foot on campus 2 years ago," said head coach
Mike McGuire. "He worked extremely hard for this opportunity, it can be argued that Josh is a true 5 tool player, but to see the growth and development he had in our program is very gratifying."
Prior to the season, Skowronski's talent had already earned him plenty of recognition. He was named Preseason All-Big South Conference, tabbed a Draft Gem by Baseball America, and slotted in as the #8 prospect in the Big South for the 2026 draft by D1Baseball.
