Box Score

ROCK HILL, SC – No. 2 seed Liberty used two comebacks, including a four-run fifth inning, to defeat No. 5 seed Winthrop, 9-7 in Game 9 of the 2010 Royal Purple Big South Baseball Championship, May 28 at The Winthrop Ballpark on the campus of Winthrop University.

With the victory, Liberty improves to 41-18 and advances to play the loser of No. 1 Coastal Carolina-No. 4 High Point Friday night at 7:00pm for a chance to earn a berth in Saturday's Championship game.  Winthrop, which fell to the Flames, 7-2, in their first tournament meeting on Wednesday, is eliminated with the loss and ends its season at 27-30.

Both teams scored in the first inning, with Liberty emerging with an early 3-2 lead.  Winthrop's Tyler Cook opened the game with a single to center and scored on Adam Gliebe's third triple of the season.  Chas Crane plated Gliebe with an RBI-ground out to second to put the Eagles ahead, 2-0.  In the bottom half, Liberty went on top after Curran Redal singled to start the inning and Matt Williams followed with a walk.  Tyler Bream doubled down the left field line to score Redal, and Williams scored on P.J. Jimenez's sacrifice fly to tie it at 2-2.  Kenneth Negron singled to score Bream with the third run of the inning.

Winthrop's Eddie Rohan made the score 3-3 in the top of the second with a blast over the scoreboard in left field.  It was his career-high 15th home run of the season and the 42nd of his career.  The Eagles moved ahead 4-3 in the fourth, when Rohan singled and later scored on Tyler McBride's single to right.  But the Flames countered again and tied the game at 4-4 on Jimenez's third homer of the season.

The scoring continued in the fifth inning when Winthrop moved ahead 6-4 with two runs in the frame.  Gliebe and Crane reached on walks, and Patrick Gamblin doubled home Gliebe to regain the lead.  Crane later scored on a wild pitch by new Liberty pitcher J.J. McLeod.  And for the third time, the Flames responded in the bottom of the inning, this time scoring four times with two outs to take an 8-6 advantage.   Matt Williams homered before Liberty loaded the bases on a single and two walks.  New Winthrop pitcher Matt Pierpoint walked Negron to force in the tying run, then Austin Taylor delivered a two-run single.

Winthrop made it a one-run game in the seventh.  Matt Thielepape singled and Rohan was hit-by-pitch.  Wade Newman struck out, but Sean Sullivan singled to load the bases.  McBride's fielder's choice scored Thielepape to make it 8-7.  Liberty got the run back in the eighth inning for the final margin.

Jimenez, Negron and Taylor each had two RBI for the Flames, while Redal, Williams and Bream each recorded two hits. The victory was the 41st for Liberty, setting a school record for victories in a season.

Liberty Head Coach Jim Toman
“The guys really ground it out this morning.  While things didn't always go our way, we found a way to win.  It is great to get our school wins with 41.  Once again, our pitching kept us in the game and we were able to get the victory.”

Winthrop Head Coach Joe Hudak
“I thought we were a vastly different team the last three weeks than we were at the first part of the year.  I also thought our effort in the conference tournament was tremendous.  Our backs were against the wall from the very first game. We have five seniors on this club.  They all played hard and had pivotal parts in our program, and we will miss them.  I think the future looks bright for us.”
