Winthrop Baseball Defeats Liberty 8-5 On Senior Day

Eagles Capture Series Win Over The Flames

The Winthrop baseball team posted a six-run third inning en route to an 8-5 victory over the Liberty Flames on Saturday afternoon at The Winthrop Ballpark.

The Eagles improve to 25-28 overall with the victory and 13-14 in the conference, while the Flames fall to 39-17 on the season and 19-8 in conference play.

Tyler Mizenko (3-3) tossed 3.0 innings in the finale on Saturday and gave up one run (none earned) on one hit, no walks and one strikeout to earn the victory. Dustin Umberger (2-4) took the losing surrendering six runs on five hits, three walks and two strikeouts in 2.2 innings pitched. Matt Pierpont (1) picked up his first collegiate save pitching one scoreless inning and allowed just one hit.

“It was just a great win for us today,” said head coach Joe Hudak.

Matt Thielepape gave Winthrop a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on his leadoff solo home run to right field against Umberger. The homer by Thielepape was his 10th of the season.

The Flames tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third when Kenneth Negron scored from second base on a throwing error by Adam Gliebe at shortstop, but the Eagles responded with six runs in their half of the third to make it a 7-1 contest. Tyler Cook got the scoring started with two outs on his RBI single to right field and later came home on a throwing error by the Liberty first baseman attempting to turn a double play. Patrick Gamblin followed with a two RBI single to left field and Gliebe cleared the bases two batters later on his two RBI double into the left center field gap.

The Flames trimmed the deficit to 7-5 heading into the eighth inning after plating three runs in the sixth inning and one in the seventh. P.J. Jimenez drove in two runs on his double into right center field and Michael Robertson added an RBI single in the sixth inning, while Jimenez recorded an RBI single in the top of the seventh.

Winthrop scored an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning to increase its lead to 8-5 on Sean Sullivan's RBI single to right field.

Four different Liberty hitters had two hits in the series finale and Jimenez drove in a team-high three RBI. Cook, Gamblin and Gliebe all led the Eagles offensively with two hits apiece, and Gamblin and Gliebe had two RBI each.

Saturday was Senior Day for Winthrop as five seniors were honored prior to the start of the game. The five seniors were: Tyler McBride, Matt Thielepape, Tyler Fries, Greg Hough and Jason Kosakow.
