ROCK HILL, SC –
Patrick Gamblin's first career grand slam highlighted a nine-run sixth inning for the Winthrop baseball team as it defeated the Liberty Flames 11-2 on Friday evening at The Winthrop Ballpark.

The Eagles improve to 24-28 on the season and 12-14 in the Big South, while the Flames fall to 39-16 overall and 19-7 in conference play.

“Robert has got electric stuff,” said head coach Joe Hudak. “We needed a good start tonight and he gave us one.”

The grand slam by Gamblin was his seventh of the season and capped off an inning in which Winthrop sent 12 batters to plate. Adam Gliebe started the scoring with his RBI single and Max Vogel followed with an RBI pinch-hit sacrifice fly to center field. Sean Sullivan, Tyler Cook and Eddie Rohan all recorded an RBI in the inning before Gamblin's homer off the batter's eye in center field against Liberty reliever Cameron Giannini.

The Flames jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single to center field by Nathan Thompson. Tyler Bream scored on the base hit after he reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a throwing error by Cook.

The Eagles later tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning when Gramblin drove in Rohan on his RBI sacrifice fly to center field and then took a 2-1 in the fifth inning when Sullivan scored on a wild pitch by Teufel.

Liberty was able to tie the game again in the top of the sixth at 2-2 on Bream's solo homer to left field before Winthrop broke the game open in its half of the sixth.

“What a difference a day makes,” Hudak added. “This was a big win for us after not playing well at all last night. We did a great job tonight and hopefully we can build off that.”

Gamblin was one of five Eagles with two hits apiece on Friday night and also drove in a career-high five RBI in the contest. Matt Williams led the Flames offensively with two hits, while Bream and Thompson posted one RBI each.

Winthrop and Liberty will conclude their three-game series on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. It will be Senior Day for the Eagles as they will honor five seniors prior to the start of the series finale.
