Biography

2010:  Compiled a 6-5 record as a junior with a 5.07 ERA in 15 games started (15 appearances). Was second on the pitching staff with 94.0 innings pitched and finished tied for third in the Big South with two complete games. Allowed 65 runs (53 earned) on 105 hits, 23 walks and 72 strikeouts, while opponents hit .288 against him. Finished ranked in the top 10 for the conference in innings pitched, strikeouts and games started. Began season earning both Big South Pitcher of the Week and Southeast Pitcher of the Week by College Baseball Insider for his 7.0 inning performance against George Mason on Feb. 20 in which he gave up no runs on just three hits, two walks and a career-high nine strikeouts. Picked up first complete game of the season in an 8-2 win at VMI on May 15 in which he allowed two earned runs on eight hits, three walks and eight strikeouts. Would get his second complete game of the season in a 7-2 loss to Liberty in the Big South Tournament. Struck out five or more batters in an appearance 10 times last season, including striking out five batters in seven of his last nine starts of the season. 

2009:  Pitched the only complete game by a Winthrop pitcher in a 6-1 victory against Liberty in the Big South Conference Tournament on May 23 giving up only one run on six hits, no walks and five strikeouts. Named to the Big South Conference All-Tournament Team for his performance against the Flames. Compiled a 6-3 record and a 6.63 ERA in 19 appearances with 10 starts. Gave up a total of 57 earned runs in 77.1 innings pitched on 96 hits, 21 walks and was third on the team with 47 strikeouts. In his first start of the season against Eastern Michigan on Feb. 21, he pitched 8.1 innings allowing one run on five hits while striking out six batters and issuing no walks. Also pitched an impressive 7.0 innings against Coastal Carolina on Mar. 22 striking out a season-high seven Chanticleers and gave up only two runs on six hits and one walk. Was ranked sixth in the Big South in innings pitched.   


2008:  Pitched a total of 42.2 innings in 18 appearances while racking up a 1-0 record and a 4.85 ERA. Also struck out 31 batters which was good for fifth on the team. Picked up his only victory of the season against Prairie View A&M in which he pitched 4.0 innings giving up no earned runs on one hit, no walks and three strikeouts. Also pitched 4.2 innings and striking out a season-high five batters against St. John’s.  


High School:  Lettered in baseball, basketball and football. Was a two-time baseball MVP. Played in the North/South All-Start Game. Voted All-State as a senior and All-Area as a junior and senior. Struck out 12 batters in the State Game. Made the Academic Honor Roll in five semesters.  


Personal:  The son of Robert and Gerdi Lake, Robert is a Political Science major who enjoys fishing and hunting, and plans on playing professional baseball after graduation. His favorite food is fried chicken and Old Yeller is his favorite book. John Smoltz is his favorte athlete.
