CHARLESTON, SC – The Winthrop baseball team scored two runs with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to defeat the Charleston Southern Buccaneers 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at the CSU Ballpark. The Eagles snapped a six-game losing streak with the win.
Winthrop improves to 14-16 overall and 2-6 in the conference, while the Buccaneers fall to 15-19 on the season and 4-6 in conference play.
“What a big win for us,” said head coach Joe Hudak.
Matteo D'Angelo (3-3) tied his career-long outing on Saturday hurling 8.0 innings and gave up just one run on three hits, three walks and seven strikeouts en route to the victory. Greg Hough (2) came on to pick up the one out save in the ninth inning. Stew Brase (2-2) took the loss allowing two runs on two hits, one walk and no strikeouts in one inning of relief for Charleston Southern.
“Matteo threw a great game for us,” Hudak said. “That's two great starts in a row he has given us. None were bigger than this.”
Brase came on to pitch for starter Tyler Thornburg in the ninth and quickly got Chas Crane to line out to left field and Matt Thielepape to groundout to shortstop, but Sean Sullivan got the rally started with his walk. Sullivan then proceeded to steal second base and came home on Zak Blair's game-tying RBI single to center field. Blair would also steal second and scored on Adam Gliebe's go-ahead RBI single that just made it over the reach of the shortstop.
The base hit by Gliebe gave him a team-high two hits on the afternoon, while Blair and Tyler McBride posted the other two hits for the Eagles.
The lone Buccaneer run came in the bottom of the seventh inning on Thornburg's home run to left center field. The homer broke a scoreless tie as each team had one hit apiece heading into the inning.
“The effort and preparation has been there, we just haven't executed,” added Hudak. “I thought we did that pretty well today.”
Thornburg, Jon Matthews and Patrick Dolan had all three Charleston Southern hits.
Winthrop and the Buccaneers will conclude the three-game series on Sunday, Apr. 11 at 2 p.m.
