Biography

2010:  Named Second Team All-Big South recognition as a starting pitcher, and also placed on SEBaseball.com’s Second Team All-Big South. Had one of three complete games, the first in his career, last season, which came on May 1 against Presbyterian. The complete game was also the only shutout of the season for the pitching staff, and it earned him both Big South Pitcher of the Week and Southeast Pitcher of the Week by College Baseball Insider. Finished the season as one of the top pitchers in the conference, as he was ranked sixth in individual pitching. Was also fourth in innings pitched, seventh in strikeouts, tied for third in games started and tied for first in shutouts. Posted a team-best 8-5 record with a 4.01 ERA in 15 games started (15 appearances) in a career-high 94.1 innings pitched. Allowed 47 runs (42 earned) on 100 hits, 18 walks and 76 strikeouts. He led all starting pitchers in strikeouts, walks, runs and earned runs. Opponents hit just .279 on the season against him. Pitched in 7.0 innings or more in seven different appearances, including five straight from Apr. 3 against Gardner-Webb to May 1 against the Blue Hose. Never walked more than three batters in a start all season-long, and had three starts in which he did not surrender a base on ball. Had a career-best nine strikeout performance against Radford on Apr. 25 and also added eight strikeouts at VMI on May 14. 

2009:  Earned Second Team All-Big South Conference honors after posting a team-best 8-3 record and a 3.09 ERA in 84.1 innings pitched. Allowed 34 runs (29 earned) on 83 hits, 22 walks and 60 strikeouts; opponents hit just .259 against him. Was ranked third in individual pitching in the Big South, tied for fourth in wins, eighth in strikeouts, fourth in innings pitched, tied for fourth in games started and sixth in opposing batting average. Had a career-best outing against Charleston Southern going 8.0 innings giving up one earned run on four hits, two walks and six strikeouts.


2008:  Posted a 5.54 ERA in 37.1 innings of work and an 0-2 record in 23 appearances as a freshman. Struck out 41 batters while giving up 23 earned runs. Pitched a season-high 3.2 innings against High Point in which he gave up no runs on four hits, one walk and three strikeouts.


High School (Italian League):  Voted the 2007 Rookie of the Year and Best Italian Starting Pitcher of the Year. Played in the Junior European Championship in 2005 in Pamplona, Spain. Was part of the Junior Italian squad that participated in the World Championships in Cuba in 2006. Represented his country in the 2007 Olympic Games Qualifying section in Barcelona, Spain. Played with the Italian Senior National Team in the World Championships in 2007 in Taipei, Taiwan.


Personal:  The son of Domenico D’Angelo and Antonella Ladetto, Matteo is an International Business major who enjoys traveling, cooking and watching movies, and plans on playing professional baseball after graduation. Prosciutto and mozzarella is his favorite food, and Imperium is his favorite book. Greg Maddux is his favorite athlete.
