Box Score

COLLEGE STATION, TX –
The Winthrop baseball team suffered a 2-1 defeat to the Texas A&M Aggies in the final game of the three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Olsen Field.

The Eagles record falls to 7-3 on the season, while the Aggies improve to 9-2 overall.

“I thought we played very well today,” said head coach Joe Hudak. “We deserved to win the game. We didn't get any breaks. I told the guys after the game I was proud of how hard they played. We played the way we were capable of.”

Tyler Mizenko (0-1) took the loss on Sunday pitching 1.1 innings and allowed one run on two hits, one walk and one strikeout. John Stilson (2-0) earned the victory giving up no runs on one hit, one walk and four strikeouts in 3.2 innings pitched.

Winthrop starter Wade Newman had a solid outing as he pitched 6.1 innings and gave up only one run on six hits, one walk and two strikeouts.

“Wade threw a great ballgame,” Hudak said. “I couldn't ask for anything more.”

Texas A&M jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on Kevin Gonzalez's RBI single to right field that scored Kenny Jackson from second base. Jackson reached on a double down the left field line in his at-bat.

The Eagles tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth inning on Eddie Rohan's RBI double into right center field that brought home Sean Sullivan from second base. Sullivan led off the inning with a single to center field.

Winthrop had a chance to take the lead in the sixth after loading the bases with one out, but could not manage to score any runs as Stilson came on and struck out Rohan and Matt Pierpont. Adam Gliebe was hit by a pitch to start the inning, Chas Crane followed with a walk and Matt Thielepape singled to center field to load the bases.

The Aggies would take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning on an RBI double by Brodie Greene off Mizenko, who came on in relief of Newman in the 7th inning. Andrew Collazo came home on the double after reaching on a walk to start the inning.

“It's certainly disappointing to leave here with three losses, but I'm encouraged with how we played today,” added Hudak.

Sullivan, Thielepape and Rohan all had three hits for the Eagles on the afternoon, while Arthur, Greene and Gonzalez posted two hits apiece for Texas A&M.

Winthrop will be back in action on Thursday, Mar. 11 as it hosts the Toledo Rockets at 4 p.m. on the first day of the Johnny Gill Memorial.
