ROCK HILL, SC – Andrew Barry singled home Jordan Enos with no outs in the top of the tenth inning as the Holy Cross Crusaders defeated the Winthrop Eagles 4-3 in 10 innings at The Winthrop Ballpark on Sunday afternoon in the series finale between the two teams.
The Eagles fall to 2-14 on the season, while the Crusaders improve to 5-6 overall.
John Colella (1-1) earned the win in relief tossing 3.0 innings and gave up one run on one hit, one walk and three strikeouts.
Michael Gilroy (0-2) took the loss allowing one run (none earned) on two hits, no walks and no strikeouts as he faced two batters in the tenth inning. Winthrop starter
Tyler Klitsch set new career-highs in innings pitched and strikeouts as he tossed 9.0 innings and surrendered three runs (two earned) on seven hits, no walks and seven strikeouts in his first start of the season.
Gilroy came on in relief of Klitsch to start the tenth inning for the Eagles, and Enos led things off for Holy Cross with a double down the left field line and went to third on a passed ball. Barry followed with his single in the next at-bat.
TJ Olesczuk gave Winthrop a 1-0 lead with his first home of the season in the bottom of the second on the first pitch delivered from Crusader starting pitcher Tommy Marra off the top of the scoreboard in left center field. The homer by Olesczuk was also the second of his career. Marra finished the game for Holy Cross with 7.0 innings pitched giving up two runs on three hits, two walks and seven strikeouts.
The Crusaders tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth when Steven Tkowski scored from second base on a throwing error after Patrick Puentes reached on an infield single. Holy Cross then took a 3-1 in the fifth inning on Mike Ahmed's two-run homer to left field against Klitsch for his first of the season. Enos scored on the home run as he singled to center field to start the top of the fifth.
The Eagles trimmed their deficit to one run at 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth when
Jason Driver came home on
Justin Hopper's RBI groundout with one out in the inning. Driver started the sixth inning with a double into the left center field gap and went to third on a passed ball.
Winthrop tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the ninth inning on
Patrick Gamblin's RBI sacrifice fly to center field with one out that brought home
Matt Lobacz from third base. Lobacz led off the Eagles half of the ninth with a double off the right field wall and went to third on a sacrifice bunt by
TJ Olesczuk.
Lobacz finished the game for Winthrop with a team-high two hits, while Hopper, Olesczuk and Gamblin had one RBI each. Ahmed led the Holy Cross offense with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate and two RBI.
The Eagles will return to action on Monday, Mar. 12 as they will host the Valparaiso Crusaders at 6 p.m.
