ROCK HILL, SC –
The Winthrop baseball team concluded its three-game series with the Charleston Southern Buccaneers on Saturday afternoon falling in both games of a doubleheader at The Winthrop Ballpark. The Eagles lost the first game 7-6 before dropping the finale 7-3.

Winthrop falls to 19-22 overall and 9-9 in the Big South, while the Buccaneers improve to 22-22 on the season and 9-9 in conference play.

“We didn't compete very well at the plate today,” said head coach Tom Riginos following game two. “We need to make an adjustment on that. It's disappointing that we didn't compete better. I think we could have done a better job staying with our approach.”

Patrick Dolan (3-2) earned the win in game one tossing 5.0 innings and allowed three runs (one earned) on two hits, five walks and seven strikeouts. Robert Lake (2-4) took the loss pitching 5.1 innings and gave up seven runs on 10 hits, no walks and seven strikeouts. Charlie McCready (4) received the save throwing 4.0 innings and surrendered three runs on seven hits, no walks and three strikeouts.

Nick Chinners gave Charleston Southern a 1-0 lead in the top of the second with his leadoff solo home run down the left field line for his third of the season, but the Eagles responded in the bottom of the third and tied the game up at 1-1 on Eddie Rohan's solo home run to left field. It was his third long ball of the season and 45th of his career, moving him into a tie for third place all-time in Big South history with Mike Costanzo of Coastal Carolina (2003-05) in that category.

The Buccaneers came back to take a 3-1 lead in their half of the fourth inning scoring two runs on a double down the left field line by Matt Still.

Winthrop tied the game back up in the bottom of the fourth at 3-3 when Patrick Gamblin stole third base and scored on a throwing error by catcher Blake Hunt attempting to get Adam Gliebe out at second on the double-steal. Gliebe then came home two batters later when Tyler Cook was caught in a rundown between first and second base.

Charleston Southern broke the game open in the sixth inning plating four runs and making it a 7-3 ballgame. The inning was highlighted by Walt Quattlebaum's leadoff solo home run for his third of the season. Brantley Meier also contributed a two RBI single and an RBI double by Hunt.

The Eagles did trim the deficit to one run at 7-6 in the bottom of the seventh driving home three runs, but could get no closer. Chas Crane started the scoring with his RBI double with no outs in the inning, and then Matt Lobacz posted an RBI groundout. Gamblin then brought home Crane with his RBI single to right field.

Gliebe led Winthrop offensively in game one with two hits, while four different players drove in one run each. Four Buccaneer hitters recorded two hits apiece, and two had two RBI.

Jesse Cadenhead (3-4) pitched a complete game in the finale giving up three runs on six hits, three walks and nine strikeouts. Matteo D'Angelo (4-5) took the loss allowing three runs on five hits, no walks and no strikeouts in 2.2 innings of work.

Charleston Southern jumped out to a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third inning after driving in one run in the second inning and two in the third. The lone run in the second came on a RBI single by Derek Smith, and in the third inning Chinners and Quattlebaum drove in both runs.

The Eagles cut it to a 3-1 contest in the bottom of the third when Cook scored on a wild pitch by Cadenhead, but the Buccaneers responded with one run in the fifth inning and two in the eighth to extend their lead to 6-1. Alex Tomasovich posted an RBI single in the fifth and Meier a two-run single in the eighth inning.

Winthrop got an RBI sacrifice fly from Rohan in the bottom of the eighth with two outs to make it a 6-2 game. Cook scored on the sacrifice fly after starting the inning with an infield single and moved to third base on a single by Cam Walters and a fielder's choice by Leighton Daniels.

Both teams drove home one run each in their part of the ninth inning when Charleston Southern got a RBI single by Quattlebaum and Brett Thomas coming home for the Eagles after Gliebe hit into a double play.

Gamblin had a team-high three hit performance for Winthrop in the finale, while Rohan had the only RBI. Tomasovich went 3-for-4 at the plate for the Buccaneers, and Meier and Quattlebaum drove in two runs each.
