Box Score

WINSTON-SALEM, NC –
Conor Keniry scored the game-winning run on a fielder's choice by Austin Stadler with one out in the bottom of the eleventh inning as the Wake Forest Demon Deacons defeated the Winthrop Eagles 9-8 on Tuesday night at the Wake Forest Baseball Park.

The Eagles fall to 18-20 on the season, while the Demon Deacons improve to 15-23 overall.

“We had a small room for error,” said head coach Tom Riginos. “We had a few mistakes in the beginning and middle of the ballgame that kind of hurt us, but the guys did come back.”

Niko Spezial (1-0) earned the win tossing 2.2 scoreless innings of relief and allowed one hit, no walks and two strikeouts. Tommy Lawrence (1-4) took the loss surrendering three runs on three hits, one walk and one strikeout in 3.1 innings of work.

Matt Pierpont tossed a career-high 6.0 innings on Tuesday evening and allowed three runs on seven hits, one walk and six strikeouts for Winthrop.

“I thought Matt pitched well tonight,” Riginos said. “He competes out there every time and kept us right in the ballgame.”

Pat Blair began the Wake Forest eleventh inning getting hit by the first pitch delivered from Lawrence. He would then be thrown out at second base on a fielder's choice by Keniry. Keniry then moved to third on a single to center field by Steven Brooks.

The Demon Deacons picked up three runs in the bottom of the first inning against Eagle starter Wade Newman. Blair began the inning with a home run over the left center field fence, and then Mac Williamson followed three batters later with a two RBI double off the center field fence to give Wake Forest a 3-0 lead.

It would stay that way until the top of the third when Winthrop scored five runs against Demon Deacon reliever Daniel Marrs and take a 5-3 lead. Matt Lobacz drove in Chas Crane for the first run of the inning with his RBI single, and Patrick Gamblin and Adam Gliebe posted back-to-back RBI's for the Eagles. Gamblin drove in a run with his single and Gliebe an RBI groundout. Brett Thomas and Tyler Cook also recorded an RBI in the inning.

Wake Forest responded to tie the game at 5-5 with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Both runs scored on a two-out two RBI single to center field by Keniry.

Winthrop answered back with three runs in the sixth inning to re-take the lead at 8-5. Gamblin drove in his second run of the contest after a fielding error by Carlos Lopez at third base scored Crane and Lobacz. Gliebe came up in the next at-bat and brought home Gamblin with his RBI single.

The Demon Deacons trimmed the deficit to 8-6 in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI groundout by Charlie Morgan, and then tied the game back up at 8-8 on a one-out two RBI single to right field by Williamson in the ninth inning.

Gliebe led the Eagles offensively on the evening with three hits, and tied with Gamblin for a team-high two RBI each. Blair went 4-for-5 at the plate for Wake Forest, while Williamson drove in four runs.

Winthrop will be back in action on Friday, Apr. 22 as it will host the Charleston Southern Buccaneers in the first game of a three-game Big South Conference series at The Winthrop Ballpark. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
