Baseball Faces Wake Forest For Second Straight Week On Tuesday Night

Eagles Defeated Demon Deacons 6-5 In 10 Innings On Apr. 13 At Home

ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop baseball team will look to snap a three-game losing streak on Tuesday evening as it will travel to Winston-Salem, NC to face the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.

This will be the second meeting this season between the Eagles and Demon Deacons. Winthrop won the first meeting 6-5 in 10 innings on Apr. 13 in Rock Hill. Eddie Rohan tied the contest up at 5-5 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth with his RBI single, and TJ Olesczuk scored the game-winning run in the tenth when he doubled, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a throwing error.

The pitching matchup will feature Matt Pierpont of the Eagles going against John McLeod of Wake Forest. Both players pitched in the first contest, with Pierpont starting for Winthrop and McLeod coming on in relief for the Demon Deacons. Pierpont pitched 5.1 innings and allowed three runs on two hits, three walks and four strikeouts. McLeod faced just two batters and walked both of them. Neither player factored into the decision for their team.

Rohan led the Eagles in the first game with three RBI, with two coming on a bases-clearing triple that was part of a three-run third inning. He was one of three Winthrop players, along with Cam Walters and TJ Olesczuk, to record two hits for the home team. Mac Williamson had a team-high two RBI for Wake Forest, while Charlie Morgan posted two hits.

The Demon Deacons lead the all-time series 8-7 and 4-2 in games played in Winston-Salem. The last win for the Eagles on the road in this series was on Mar. 28, 2007 in a 15-9 victory.

Winthrop is led offensively by Rohan with a .380 average, two home runs, 27 RBI and 73 RBI. He is tied for the team-lead in home runs with Patrick Gamblin, Adam Gliebe and Matt Lobacz. His 73 total bases, .533 slugging percentage and .479 on-base percentage are also tops on the team. Gamblin and Cam Walters are tied for the team-lead in stolen bases with 10 apiece.

All three weekend starting pitchers for the Eagles lead the pitching staff in at least one category. Matteo D'Angelo leads the starters with a 4-4 record and 3.38 ERA; he has also allowed just five walks in 50.2 innings pitched. Tyler Mizenko posts a team-low opposing average at .256, while Robert Lake has pitched in a team-high 56.1 innings. Eric Ruth's five victories on the mound are tops on the team in the won-loss column. Mitchell Knox leads the relievers with a 3.60 ERA in 30.0 innings pitched.

Wake Forest enters the Tuesday night contest with a 14-23 overall record and 6-12 mark in the ACC. They are under the direction of second-year head coach Tom Walter.

Mac Williamson continues to lead the Demon Deacons in all three major offensive categories with a .302 average, seven home runs and 32 RBI. He is the only Wake Forest player to post a batting average above the .300 mark. Steven Brooks has been a threat on the base paths in 2011 for the Demon Deacons stealing 19 bases in 21 attempts.

Tim Cooney leads the pitching staff with a 4-2 record and 2.80 ERA in 61.0 innings pitched. He has started in nine games this season. Michael Dimock also has a 1.85 ERA in a team-high 19 appearances. He and Chris Wilson have recorded two saves each.
