Winthrop University Athletics

2010:  Was second on the team with 28 appearances, which tied him for seventh in the Big South, as a freshman and compiled a 1-0 record and a 6.55 ERA, and also recorded one start. Pitched in 34.1 innings and gave up 29 runs (25 earned) on 40 hits, 15 walks and 30 strikeouts. His first collegiate start came against Liberty in the Big South Tournament on May 28 in which he pitched a career-high 4.2 innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits, three walks and tied his career-best with three strikeouts. Also had a three-strikeout performance in 1.0 scoreless inning of relief against Presbyterian on May 2. Made first career appearance on Feb. 20 against George Mason in which he pitched 1.0 innings and gave up one run on two hits, no walks and two strikeouts. Had 14 scoreless appearances in 2010, including four consecutive appearances on two separate occasions. The first streak lasted from Feb. 27 against Wagner until Mar. 19 against Columbia, and the second one was from Apr. 2 at Gardner-Webb to Apr. 11 at Charleston Southern. Did not allow a walk in 18 of his appearances, which included six straight from Apr. 2 against the Runnin’ Bulldogs until Apr. 16 at UNC Asheville. Picked up first collegiate victory in 12-5 win over Harvard on Mar. 16 in which he tossed 2.1 scoreless innings of relief and gave up only one hit, two walks and one strikeout. 

High School:  Helped lead North Penn High School to a perfect 14-0 record and the PA District One Championship. Named First Team Suburban One All-Conference. Compiled a 8-0 record as a junior with one save to go along with a 1.84 ERA and 71 strikeouts in 53 innings of work. Has also pitched in the WWBA Championships in Jupiter, FL where he struck out 13 batters in seven innings pitched.   

Personal:  The son of Dan and Elaine Ruth, Eric is a Sport Management major who enjoys listening to music and hanging out with friends and family, and plans on obtaining a well-paying job after graduation. His favorite food is Philadelphia cheese steak, and Chase Utley is his favorite athlete.
