Eagles Bounce Two-Time Defending Big South Champions 5-2

BOX SCORE

ROCK HILL, SC- The Eagles were able to go out in style in their last regular season home match by defeating the 2-time defending Big South Champions.  The Winthrop Men's tennis team registered a statement win this Tuesday afternoon when they handed Radford University a 5-2 defeat.

Radford was looking to make it three consecutive victories against Winthrop in as many years.  Two seasons ago was the last time Winthrop was able to take out Radford in what was a 4-3 win during the regular season.  Today's victory puts the Eagles at 5-1 in Big South Conference play and undefeated in Big South Conference play when at home.  Winthrop, 9-10 overall, will look to get back to the .500 mark when they travel to Clinton, South Carolina this coming Friday, April 12th to take on Presbyterian College at 2 p.m.

The doubles round featured a fresh sweep of all three courts by the Winthrop Eagles.  Freshmen Corey Decandia (Adelaide, Australia) and Juan Pablo Boada (La Paz, Bolivia) started things off with a quick 8-3 win over Carter and Waase at the No. 3 spot.  Sophomores Peter Nagovnak (Kraubath, Austria) and Dylan Comerford (Johannesburg, South Africa) clinched the doubles point for the Eagles with an 8-5 win over Dehaen and Sayer at the top position.  Freshmen Steven Patrick (Knoxville, Tennessee) and junior Yuta Hirokawa (Niigata, Japan) capped off the doubles round with an 8-6 victory over Radford's Meulemans and Mills.

Just as they did against UNC-Asheville two days ago, the Eagles were once again able to put their opponents away rather swiftly as they went up 4-1 on Radford.  Winthrop freshman Michael Chen (Johnson City, Tennessee) wanted no part of playing in today's hot weather as he took out Javier Waase 6-0, 6-2 in less than an hour at the No. 6 position.  Nagovnak finished soon after, not allowing his opponent a single game in a 6-0, 6-0 rout over Randall Carter.  With his second clinch in as many matches, freshman Ivar Aramburu (Puebla, Mexico) came up with the goods yet again with a 6-4, 6-0 win over last year's Big South Player of the Year, Nicholas Sayer.    Comerford produced some big shots at the No. 1 position for the Eagles but ended up falling in a 6-2, 6-3 effort against Radford's Stijn Meulemans.  Hirokawa had quite a battle at the No. 3 spot but it wasn't enough as he suffered a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Thomas Dehaen.  Boada padded the score line for the Eagles when he outlasted Radford's Joe Mills 6-4, 7-6 at the No. 5 position.
