Men's Tennis Suffers Quarterfinal Exit to Radford University

BOX SCORE

ROCK HILL, S.C. –
No. 5 seed Radford held off a late rally by No. 4 seed Winthrop to upend the Eagles, 4-1, Thursday afternoon and advance to the semifinals of the Big South Men's Tennis Championship held at the Winthrop Memorial Tennis Courts.

Stijn Meulemans and Joe Mills got the day started off for Radford (8-12) by downing Winthrop's Yuta Hirokawa and Steven Patrick at No. 2 doubles. The Eagles (9-13) responded on court three when Juan Pablo Boada and Corey Decandia dropped Radford's Patrick O'Keefe and Randall Carter 8-4.  The doubles point came down to the top flight where the Winthrop sophomore duo of Dylan Comerford and Peter Nagovnak were locked in a tight one with Radford's Nick Sayer and Thomas Dehaen. Down 4-1 in the tiebreaker, Comerford and Nagovnak dug deep to draw even but Radford was able to extend their lead to 6-3 in the tiebreaker. The Eagles' duo fought off three match points and eventually earned a match point themselves at 7-6. Down matchpoint, Sayer and Dehaen managed to reel off three straight points to capture the tiebreaker, 9-7, and give RU the 1-0 edge.

In the singles round, freshman Michael Chen lost to O'Keefe at the No. 6 spot while Ivar Aramburu also fell in straight sets to Radford's Sayer at the No. 2 position putting Radford up 3-0 over the Eagles. Nagovnak started the comeback for the Eagles as he once again delivered a confident straight sets win over Radford's Carter, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5 singles. Radford threatened to close out the match on court four with Mills up a set and 5-2 in the second, but Winthrop's Boada forced a third set by rallying for a 7-5 second-set triumph. Radford's Meulemans delivered the match-clinching win for the Highlanders with a 6-3, 7-6 win over Comerford at the No. 1 slot.

The Highlanders will meet No. 1 seed Coastal Carolina in the semifinals Friday at a time to be determined.
