Presbyterian Steals 4-3 Win Over Winthrop

BOX SCORE

CLINTON, SC- Presbyterian College, last year's Big South Conference runner-up, put a stop to Winthrop's four match winning streak with a 4-3 clinching victory over the Eagles this Friday afternoon.

Looking for the record equalizer, the Eagles now fall to 9-11 overall on the season and 5-2 in Big South Conference play.  The Eagles will look to start a new streak this coming Sunday as they take on conference-leading Coastal Carolina in a pivotal Big South Conference regular season finale.  With the Big South Conference tournament on the horizon, the Eagles hope to end the regular season with a win and carry their momentum into the tournament which will be held at Winthrop University April 18th-20th.

The doubles round came down to the wire as the point was once again decided at the No. 3 position.  Presbyterian struck first as Berghaus and Mills edged out freshman Steven Patrick and junior Yuta Hirokawa (Niigata, Japan) 8-6 at the No. 2 spot.  Sophomores Dylan Comerford and Peter Nagovnak came to the call with an 8-6 victory over O'Connell and Brigham to tie things up for the Eagles.  The freshmen duo of Corey Decandia and Juan Pablo Boada delivered the final blow as they took out PC's Snead and Bruce 8-6 to give the Eagles the crucial doubles point.

Winthrop came out firing in the singles round, capturing four first sets out of six but Presbyterian wasn't backing down without a fight.  Danny Bruce evened the match up as he delivered a 6-1, 6-1 performance over Winthrop's Hirokawa.  Nagovnak answered back quickly with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Andrew Brigham, putting the Eagles back on top. Freshman Michael Chen wasn't able to find a solution in his match as he fell in straight sets to Gonzalo Asis 6-4, 6-3.  Boada took PC's Rafael Berghaus the distance but wasn't able to outlast him in the end as he fell 6-4 in the 3rd set.  Down 3-2, freshman Ivar Aramburu put the Eagles in position to complete the comeback as he out-competed PC's William O'Connell 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 at the No. 2 position.  The match came down to a three set marathon on court No. 1 between Winthrop's Dylan Comerford and Presbyterian's Grayson Mills.  Comerford took Mills to the brink but came up a few points short in a heartbreaker as he lost 7-6, 3-6, 6-7.
