BUIES CREEK, NC- The Winthrop Eagles went into Campbell University this Saturday afternoon with their sights set on staying undefeated in Big South Conference play. At the end of the day the Camels were able to come out on top as they snuck by the Eagles 4-3.
The Eagles fall to 5-10 on the season and 1-1 in Big South play. Winthrop will look to take a stranglehold on the Big South as they host a two-game home stand next weekend against Liberty University on Friday, March 22
nd and Radford University on Sunday, March 24
th.
The doubles round was tightly contested with Campbell coming away with the point with wins at the top two positions. The Eagle sophomore duo of
Dylan Comerford (Johannesburg, South Africa) and
Peter Nagovnak (Kraubath, Austria) overcame an early deficit but fell by one break of serve, 8-6 to Guillen and Rossingnon. Freshmen
Steven Patrick (Knoxville, Tennessee) and
Corey Decandia (Adelaide, Australia) weren't able to break down Clavera and Baro as they fell 8-2. Freshmen
Michael Chen (Johnson City, Tennessee) and
Juan Pablo Boada (La Paz, Bolivia) handled Billington and Kralik 8-6 at the No. 3 spot.
Needing four points to grab the victory, Winthrop put themselves in the driver's seat when victories by Hirokawa, Boada, and Aramburu gave them the 3-2 edge. Boada was the first to put a victory on the board for the Eagles when he dropped David Clavera 7-5, 6-3. Freshman
Ivar Aramburu (Pueblo, Mexico) dropped the first set 7-5 but made quick work of last year's Big South Freshman of the Year, Adrien Rossingnon, as he won the final two sets 6-1, 6-2. Junior
Yuta Hirokawa (Niigata, Japan) had to go all the way to finish off Steve Billington as he won 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. Comerford gave the nation's #80 a run for his money at the No. 1 position but wasn't able to overcome Campbell's Fernando Guillen as he fell 6-4, 7-5. Chen took the first set 6-4 but wasn't able to close out Rik Van Gerwen as he fell in three sets, 6-4, 6-7, 4-6. Nagovnak had the honor to break the 3-3 tie and clinch the match for the Eagles at the No. 5 position as he battled against Josep Baro for over 3 hours. Nagovnak gave Baro everything he could handle but in the end it wasn't enough as he lost 7-6, 7-5.
