ORANGEBURG, SC- The men's tennis team didn't have enough to overcome South Carolina State this Friday afternoon as they fell 4-3.
The Eagles now fall to 3-7 on the season and will travel this weekend to match up against #60 Georgia State at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
The Bulldogs managed to sweep the doubles round away from the Eagles to start off the match. Sophomore
Dylan Comerford (Johannesburg, South Africa) and freshman
Corey Decandia (Adelaide, Australia) fell at the top spot 8-5 to State's Protsenko and Nikitin. Freshmen
Steven Patrick (Knoxville, Tennessee) and
Juan Pablo Boada (La Paz, Bolivia) lost at the No. 3 slot in a tiebreak decision to State's Bizon and Stiburek. With the doubles point already decided, Sophomore
Peter Nagovnak (Kraubath, Austria) and junior
Yuta Hirokawa (Niigata, Japan) ran out of time at the No. 2 spot as they were unable to finish their match.
Comerford led the charge in the singles round for the Eagles as he blew past State's No. 1 Protsenko 6-0, 6-3. Freshman
Ivar Aramburu (Mexico City, Mexico) backed up Comerford's win as he dispatched Bizon 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. Nagovnak was unable to outlast State's Vinogradovs as he fell 6-1 in the third set. South Carolina State pocketed wins at the Nos. 5 and 6 positions as Hirokawa and Boada lost in straight sets. Freshman
Michael Chen (Johnson City, Tennessee) went the distance to grab his victory as he took out State's Dragoi 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
