Eagles Suffer 6-1 Setback to Elon University

Box Score

ELON, NC-
The Winthrop Eagles were unable to capitalize and steal the victory away from Elon University this Sunday afternoon.

The Eagles fall to 3-6 on the season and will continue their long string of away matches as they next head to #32 Memphis and #60 Georgia State next weekend.

The Eagles went into Elon and took the doubles point right out from under the home team.  Sophomore Dylan Comerford (Johannesburg, South Africa) and freshman Corey Decandia  (Adelaide, Australia) were in search of their first win on the season but fell short at the No. 1 position as Elon's Silverman and Fortmann took the match 8-6 by one break of serve.    The Eagles were able to deliver at the Nos. 2 and 3 positions as junior Yuta Hirokawa (Niigata, Japan) and sophomore Peter Nagovnak (Kraubath, Austria) overcame Elon's Kowalski and Kaufman by a score of 8-6.  Freshmen Steven Patrick (Knoxville, Tennessee) and Juan Pablo Boada (La Paz, Bolivia) got back to their winning ways as they came up with the clinching point for the Eagles at the No. 3 spot with a 9-8 tiebreak win over Lindgren and Madrid.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, Elon was able to turn the tides in the singles round by recapturing the momentum as they took the first sets on all six singles courts.  Comerford fell to the #28 nationally ranked Cameron Silverman 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 1 slot.  Nagovnak and freshman Ivar Aramburu (Mexico City, Mexico) didn't have enough at the Nos. 2 and 3 positions as Elon took both points respectively.  Hirokawa battled but came out on the wrong end as he lost to Kaufman 7-6, 6-1, giving Elon the match 4-1.  The final two singles matches were played out, but Elon went on to take both of them as Winthrop's No. 5, Boada, lost 6-2, 7-6 to Kowalski.  Freshman Michael Chen (Johnson City, Tennessee) was the only Eagle to take a set from Elon in the singles but in the end Elon's Madrid got the better of him as he fell 6-2, 5-7, 10-6 at the No. 6 position.
