Winthrop Falls To Delaware State 5-0 Saturday Night At A Foggy Winthrop Ballpark

Game Called After Six Innings

Box Score

ROCK HILL, SC -- Winthrop fell to Delaware State 5-0 in six innings on Saturday night as heavy fog brought the game to an early finish.

Delaware State was hitting in the top of the seventh and had plated three runs to take a 7-0 lead when the game was halted, but according to baseball scoring rules, the score reverted back to six complete innings because the seventh inning was not completed and Winthrop was trailing.

The loss drops Winthrop's record to 2-3 while Delaware State improves to 1-3.  The same two teams will battle again in the final game of the Coca Cola Classic at The Winthrop Ballpark tomorrow afternoon.

After a rain-drenched start to the weekend delayed the start of the tournament, the first game of the Coca Cola Classic finally got underway when Eastern Kentucky defeated Army 7-6.  In the night cap, Winthrop and Delaware State took the field, and so did the fog.

Delaware State struck first in the third when Ryan Haas reached on an error by second baseman Kyle Edwards.  Eddie Sorondo followed with a single to right field advancing Haas to second base.  The next batter, Aaron Nardone, worked Eagle's hurler Tyler Klitsch to a full count before delivering a triple down the right field line scoring both Haas and Sorondo.  Nardone also scored in the inning on a ground out to Edwards at second base.

The Hornets added to their lead in the sixth when Nardone led off the inning with a double and came around to score on an RBI single to center field by Joey Babuca.  Babuca eventually scored an unearned run in the inning giving Delaware State a 5-0 lead.

After Delaware State added two more runs and had another runner at third in the top of the seventh, the foggy conditions worsened leading the umpires  to call the game, giving the Hornets the 5-0 decision.

Dominate pitching from Hornet's starter Matt McClain (1-0) stifled Winthrop's bats as he carried a no-hitter into the fourth and ended up getting the six-inning, 3-hit shutout .
Klitsch fell to 0-1 on the season.

“You have to give Delaware State credit,”  stated Winthrop head coach Tom Riginos.  “They did all the things you need to do to win a ballgame.”

Despite strong pitching from the Hornets, Winthrop sluggers Matt Lobacz and Cody Dolan continued to stay hot.  Lobacz was able to extend his hitting streak to five games with a single in the sixth inning while Dolan went 2 for 2 with a walk extending his hitting streak to four games and giving him three multi-hit games so far this season.

The Coca Cola Classic resumes tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. when Army takes on Delaware State.  Winthrop takes the field in the second game, approximately 30 minutes after the first game, against Eastern Kentucky and closes out the tournament against Delaware State in the final game.
