Men’s Tennis Splits Friday Doubleheader

USC-UPSTATE BOX SCORE
GEORGIA SOUTHERN BOX SCORE

ROCK HILL, SC-
The Winthrop men's tennis team split a doubleheader  as it defeatedUSC-Upstate 4-3 before falling to  Georgia Southern 4-1 at Memorial Courts.

The win and loss pushes Winthrop's record to 3-5 on the season and they will hit the road next weekend to face off against Elon University at 1p.m.

The Eagles were able to grab the doubles point quite confidently against USC-Upstate.  The No. 2 team of junior Yuta Hirokawa (Niigata, Japan) and sophomore Peter Nagovnak (Kraubath, Austria) held their nerve to defeat Upstate's Yvon Haessig and Jacob Darling 8-5.  The freshman duo of Steven Patrick (Knoxville, Tennessee) and Juan Pablo Boada (La Paz, Bolivia) stormed through Upstate's Jamie Yates and Ramon Simonetti 8-2 at the No. 3 position, extending their winning streak to 4 matches.

In the singles round, sophomore Dylan Comerford (Johannesburg, South Africa) was able to deliver Winthrop's first singles point at the No. 2 spot as he notched a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Upstate's Haessig.  Hirowkawa stayed solid throughout his match at No. 3 giving him a 6-3, 6-3 win over Gonzalo Blanco.  Freshman Ivar Aramburu (Mexico City, Mexico) came up with the clutch performance of the day for the Eagles as he was able to clinch the match with his 7-6, 1-6, 6-3 victory over Upstate's Simonetti.

The doubles point wasn't able to swing in Winthrop's favor against Georgia Southern.  Georgia Southern's No. 1 team of Andrew Dromsky and Carson Jones took out Winthrop's Dylan Comerford and Corey Decandia 8-4.  The Eagles No. 3 team of freshmen Patrick and Boada saw their winning streak come to a halt as Matthijs Verdam and Oliver Webb delivered an 8-5 win for Georgia Southern.

The Eagles fought valiantly in the singles round, but came up short as Georgia Southern was able to capitalize on its opportunities.  Nagovnak and Hirokawa fell at the top two positions for the Eagles, while Georgia Southern's Rayane Djouad delivered the final blow when he overtook Boada at the No. 4 position 6-4, 6-4.  Winthrop's Patrick was able to put Winthrop on the board as he made quick work of Marco Osorio 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 5 spot.
