Men’s Tennis Suffers 8-1 Loss to #39 UNC-Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC-  The Winthrop Eagles lost 8-1 to #39 UNC-Wilmington on Sunday afternoon in Wilmington.

The Eagles record falls to 2-4 on the season, but they will have a chance to even it up at home this weekend as they host USC-Upstate on Friday, February 15th and Georgia Southern on Sunday, February 17th.

For this match, it was agreed upon to play a different format that would add two more singles lines to the match total.  The usual match includes six singles and three doubles, but with the change, today's match provided eight singles and three doubles.

The doubles round went to Wilmington as they were able to take both the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches.  The No. 3 doubles was stopped and left unfinished.

In the singles portion, sophomores Dylan Comerford (Johannesburg, South Africa) and Peter Nagovnak (Kraubath, Austria) fell at the top two positions for the Eagles.  Junior Yuta Hirokawa (Niigata, Japan) dropped his match 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 3 spot.  Freshmen Juan Pablo Boada (La Paz, Bolivia) and Michael Chen (Johnson City, Tennessee) both lost 6-1, 6-0 at the Nos. 4 and 7 slots.  At the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, freshmen Corey Decandia (Adelaide, Australia) and Steven Patrick (Knoxville, Tennessee) both fell by the same score of 6-3, 6-4.  The bright spot for the Eagles was at the No. 8 position as Winthrop's freshman from Mexico City, Mexico, Ivar Aramburu took out his opponent by a line of 6-4, 6-1.
