CHARLESTON, SC- The Winthrop men's tennis team fell 5-2 in a hard fought battle against the College of Charleston on Friday afternoon in Charleston.
With the loss, Winthrop' s record drops to 2-3 on the season. The Eagles next match will be on Feb. 10 against UNC-Wilmington at 1 p.m.
Sophomore's
Dylan Comerford (Johannesburg, South Africa) and
Peter Nagovnak (Kraubath, Austria) led the way for the Eagles with two wins at the top of the lineup. At the No. 1 spot, Comerford took out Charleston's Brice Allanic 7-5, 6-2. Nagovnak was able to put away the Cougars' No. 2, Sebastian Lopez, in rather quick fashion, posting a 6-3, 6-1 victory. Junior
Yuta Hirokawa (Niigata, Japan) wasn't able to climb back into the match as the Cougars' No. 3, Crescente Lesser took the point 6-4, 6-4. Winthrop freshman
Juan Pablo Boada (La Paz, Bolivia) endured a tough loss at the No. 4 spot as Charleston's Charlie Ghrisky came away with the 6-4, 7-6 win. Freshmen
Corey Decandia (Adelaide, Australia) and
Michael Chen (Johnson City, TN) competed hard at the 5 and 6 positions, but it wasn't enough as Charleston took both points.
In the doubles action, the freshmen duo of
Steven Patrick (Knoxville, TN) and Boada extended their winning streak to three matches as they defeated Matt Daly and Billy Kenny 8-6 at the No. 3 position. The Cougars claimed both points at the 1 and 2 positions, giving Charleston the all-important doubles point.
