ROCK HILL, SC- The Winthrop men's tennis team had a successful home opener with a 5-2 victory over Tennessee Tech on Sunday afternoon at Memorial Courts.
In the doubles round, freshmen
Steven Patrick (Knoxville, Tennessee) and
Juan Pablo Boada (La Paz, Bolivia) took care of business with a quick 8-2 victory at the No. 3 spot over Tennessee Tech's Alvaro Cintas and Othon Lima. Sophomore
Dylan Comerford (Johannesburg, South Africa) and freshman
Corey Decandia (Adelaide, Australia) battled hard at the No. 2 position but fell 8-7 to Tech's Vasily Eremeev and Artem Tarasov . The deciding doubles point came down to the No. 1 court of sophomore
Peter Nagovnak (Kraubath, Austria) and junior
Yuta Hirokawa (Niigata, Japan). The duo came up big and clinched the point by a score of 8-7 over Tech's team of Syrym Abdukhalikov and Alejandro Augusto.
In the singles competition, Comerford battled but fell short against Tech's No. 1 Abdukhalikov 6-4, 7-5. At the No. 2 spot, Nagovnak gave Augusto all he could handle but it wasn't enough in the end as he fell 7-5, 6-4. At positions three through six the Eagles never let up as their opponents didn't win more than two games. Hirokawa defeated Eremeev at the No. 3 position by a score of 6-1, 6-1. Boada and Chen finished soon after as they both defeated their opponents by the same score of 6-1, 6-0. Decandia recorded his first collegiate singles win in great fashion as he defeated Tech's Cintas 6-2, 6-0.
The Eagles even their record at 2-2 with the win and will next face College of Charleston on Friday, Feb. 1.
