CLEMSON, SC – The Winthrop baseball team suffered an 11-0 defeat to the Clemson Tigers on Tuesday evening at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in non-conference action.
The Eagles fall to 9-21 on the season, while the Tigers improve to 15-13 overall.
Daniel Gossett (3-2) earned the win tossing 7.0 scoreless innings and gave up three runs on five hits, no walks and 13 strikeouts.
Josh Strong (0-2) took the loss allowing one run on two hits, two walks and no strikeouts in 2.0 innings of work.
Clemson's offense jumped out to a 9-0 lead after four innings on Tuesday night as it plated one run in the second, two in the third and six in the fourth. An RBI single by Thomas Brittle was the lone run in the bottom of the second, while Spencer Kieboom drove home Jon McGibbon on a hit-and-run double down the left line and Richie Shaffer homered to left field against Winthrop reliever
Preston Johnson in the third inning. The six-run fourth inning was highlighted by two Tiger home runs from Phil Pohl and Jason Stoltz. Pohl recorded a three-run home run to left field, while Stoltz hit a solo homer to left field. Shaffer and Jay Baum also had an RBI each for Clemson in the inning.
The Eagle pitching staff would hold the Tigers scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings, but then surrendered two runs in the seventh as Clemson extended its lead to 11-0. Brad Felder posted the only RBI of the inning on a single to left field, and Garrett Boulware scored when Mike Dunster hit into a double play.
Four different Tiger hitters had two hits each in the contest, while Pohl drove in a team-high three RBI on the home run in the fourth inning.

The Eagles will be back in action on Friday, Apr. 6 as they travel to Lexington, VA to face the VMI Keydets in the first game of a three-game Big South Conference series. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
