ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop baseball team will hit the road for the first of four games Tuesday night as it travels to Doug Kingsmore Stadium to face the Clemson Tigers. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
The Eagles enter the midweek contest with a 9-20 overall record after recorded their first conference series win of the season last weekend at Gardner-Webb, while the Tigers are currently 14-13 on the season after taking two out of three on the road at No. 7 Miami (FL).
The Winthrop offense is led by
Max Vogel with a .286 average at the plate, while
Patrick Gamblin has hit a team-high three home runs on the season.
Matt Lobacz has driven in a team-leading 21 RBI on the season in a team-best 117 at-bats. Tyler Klistch leads the Eagle pitching staff with a 2.47 ERA in 47.1 innings pitched this season, while
Matt Pierpont has a team-best three wins on the season, .233 opposing average and 50.2 innings pitched. Both
Austin Stuart and
Preston Johnson have two saves overall.
Clemson is led by head coach Jack Leggett, who is currently in his 33
rd season overall and 19
th season with the program. The Tigers are led offensively by Steve Wilkerson with a .390 average, and Richie Shaffer has hit a team-leading six home runs on the season to go with 61 total bases. Phil Pohl's 26 RBI on the season are tops on the Clemson team. The Tigers pitching staff is led by Kevin Pohle with a 1.82 ERA in 34.2 innings pitched, while Dominic Leone has a team-leading four wins on the season and 37 strikeouts. Matt Campbell also has two saves on the season for Clemson.
The Tigers lead the all-time series over Winthrop 17-4, including a 15-3 mark when playing in Clemson, SC. Clemson won the first all-time meeting in the series 9-5 in Rock Hill on Mar. 14, 1981, and also the last meeting 6-4 in Clemson on Feb. 28, 2007. The Eagles have recorded a two-game winning streak in the series from 2005-2006 with scores of 8-2 and 6-3.
