ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop baseball team fell in both games of its doubleheader finale on Saturday as the Campbell Camels completed the three-game series sweep with scores of 7-6 in 12 innings and 6-4.
The Eagles fall to 6-19 overall and 0-3 in the conference, while the Camels improve to 23-3 on the season and 3-0 in conference play.
Matt Marksberry (2-0) earned the win in relief tossing 5.0 scoreless innings and gave up one hit on no walks and two strikeouts.
Austin Stuart (0-1) took the loss allowing two runs on three hits, three walks and six strikeouts in 5.1 innings of relief.
The Winthrop offense jumped out for one run each in the first, second and third innings to take a 3-0 lead over Campbell heading into the fifth inning. The Eagles got the first three runners on base in the first as
Jason Driver walked,
Tony Brandner singled and
Patrick Gamblin doubled, and
Matt Lobacz would drive in Driver on his RBI groundout to second. Driver came up in the second inning and plated
TJ Olesczuk on an RBI sacrifice fly to right field, while Olesczuk collected an RBI single to center field in the third.
Winthrop extended its lead to 6-0 after recording one run in the fifth and two in the sixth. Lobacz began the fifth with a single to right field and came in to score four batters later when
Leighton Daniels reached on an RBI infield single in front of second base. The two-run sixth inning was highlighted by Lobacz's second RBI single of the game, and
Max Vogel also drove in a run on his fielder's choice with one out.
Eagle starter
Eric Ruth started the game retiring the first 11 batters he faced before giving up a two-out hit in the fourth inning to Jake Kirkland. Ruth ran into trouble in the top of the seventh as the Camels scored five runs against him and
Preston Johnson to cut their deficit to 6-5. The junior right-hander got Michael Felton to groundout to start the inning, but the allowed three straight singles to Kirkland, Nick Ray and Bryce Grady. Kirkland advanced to third on the single by Grady, and then scored on a throwing error by
Drew Hardee in right field. Ruth then got Kyle Holmstrom to strike out, and then surrendered a two RBI pinch-hit single to Erick Gaylord. Brent Graham and Ben McQuown also picked up an RBI each in the seventh.
The contest was then delayed in the bottom of the seventh inning for two hours and 11 minutes due to thunderstorms in the Rock Hill area. The game was resumed in the bottom of the seventh and saw Campbell tie the game up at 6-6 in the eighth on Blake Boyce's RBI double down the right field line.
The Camels would score the go-ahead run in the top of the twelfth when Ray scored on a wild pitch by Stuart with two outs in the inning.
Lobacz led the team in game one with two RBI, and tied with Olesczuk with three hits each. Three different Campbell hitters had two hits apiece, while Gaylord had two RBI.
Andrew Jacobsen (3-0) picked up the win in game two pitching 7.1 innings of relief allowing one run on three hits, four walks and nine strikeouts.
Tyler Klitsch (1-2) suffered the loss pitching 6.2 innings and gave up four runs on eight hits, no walks and six strikeouts. Ryan Mattes (2) recorded the save as he pitched one scoreless inning and surrendered just one hit.
The Eagles got on the scoreboard first with three runs in the bottom of the first highlighted by Vogel's two RBI single to left field, while Driver scored the first run of the inning on a wild pitch. The Camels would tie the game, however, with three runs of their own in the top of the second that was led by a two-run homer to left field by David Olson, and McQuown added an RBI single four batters later.
The game would remain tied until the fifth inning when Campbell took a 4-3 lead on Grady's RBI single to right field, and extended its lead to 6-3 heading into the bottom of the ninth after driving in one run each in the eighth and ninth. McQuown recorded his second RBI of the game in the eighth with a sacrifice fly to right field, and Ben Fish plated Ray with a double to left field.
Winthrop made it a 6-4 contest in the bottom of the ninth on Gamblin's RBI single to left field, but were not able to manufacture anything else as Mattes got the final two outs of the inning with runners at first and second for the Eagles.
Olesczuk had a team-high two hits for Winthrop in the doubleheader finale, while Vogel had two RBI. McQuown and Ray collected two hits each for the Camels, and McQuown and Olson drove in two runs apiece.
The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday, Mar. 28 against the Furman Paladins at The Winthrop Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
