Baseball Opens Big South Play This Weekend With Three-Game Series With Campbell

The Winthrop baseball team will kick off the conference portion of its 2012 season hosting the Campbell in a three-game series at The Winthrop Ballpark.

Game times for the series are 6 p.m. on Friday and 2 p.m. for the first game on Saturday.  Saturday will consist of a doubleheader to conclude the series between the two teams.

This weekend will mark the 39th, 40th and 41st all-time meetings between Winthrop and Campbell. The all-time series between the two teams is tied 19-19, with the Eagles holding a 12-7 advantage when playing in Rock Hill. Winthrop won the first all-time meeting in the series 15-5 in Rock Hill on Mar. 18, 1985, the Eagles' first season in the Big South, while the Camels won the last meeting 13-4 in 7 innings on May 6, 1994.

Winthrop enters the weekend with a 6-16 overall record after dropping its lone midweek contest this week at Charlotte 7-4 on Mar. 21. Campbell posts a 20-3 record on the season after sweeping Coppin State in a two-game midweek series and enter the weekend with a 15-game winning streak.

The Eagles offense is led by Patrick Gamblin with a .264 average at the plate, and is tied with Justin Hopper for the team-lead in home runs with two. Matt Lobacz has driven in a team-high 19 RBI on the season. Tyler Klitsch tops the Winthrop pitching staff with a 1.80 ERA in a team-leading 35.0 innings pitched, while Matt Pierpont and Eric Ruth have two wins each on the season.

The Camels are led by head coach Greg Goff, who is in his fourth season with the program. Campbell is led offensively by Michael Felton with a .484 average, while Jake Kirkland has a team-high four home runs and 25 RBI to go with his .417 average at the plate. Frank Zier leads the Camels pitching staff with a 3-0 record and 2.06 ERA, while David Olson has three saves on the season and a 0.00 ERA.
