SURPRISE, AZ – The Oregon State Beavers scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a four-all tie and held on for a 9-4 victory over the Winthrop Eagles on Friday afternoon at Surprise Stadium on day two of the Surprise Coca-Cola Classic.
The Eagles fall to 1-9 overall, while the Beavers improve to 6-4 on the season.
Tony Bryant (1-1) earned the win in relief tossing 1.1 scoreless innings on no hits and two strikeouts.
Michael Gilroy (0-1) took the loss allowing five runs (three earned) on three hits, three walks and no strikeouts in two-thirds of an inning in relief.
Oregon State plated one run each in the second, third and sixth innings to take a 3-0 lead heading into the top of the seventh inning. Jake Rodriguez drove in the only run in the second inning on his single with two outs after Ryan Dunn doubled down the left field line in the previous at-bat. Michael Conforto plated John Tommasini on an RBI sacrifice fly in the third, and Danny Hayes came home in the sixth when Max Gordon reached on a fielder's choice.
Winthrop tied the contest at 3-3 with three runs in the top of the seventh highlighted by
Patrick Gamblin's two RBI single to center field with two outs in the inning.
Drew Hardee started the scoring for the Eagles when he reached on an RBI fielder's choice scoring
Matt Lobacz from third. Lobacz began the inning with a double down the left field line and went to third when
Chas Crane reached on a fielding error by Hayes at first.
The Beavers re-gained the lead in their half of the seventh on Dunn's RBI sacrifice fly to center field, but Winthrop tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the eighth when Lobacz drove in
Jason Driver on an RBI groundout to second.
Oregon State's five-run eighth inning was led by a two RBI single down the left field line by Dylan Davis, while Conforto and Dunn each recorded an RBI in the inning.
Gamblin had a team-high two RBI for the Eagles and was one of five players with one hit each. He received Team MVP honors after the game. Davis, Rodriguez and Ryan Barnes recorded two hits apiece for the Beavers, and Conforto, Davis and Dunn drove in two runs each.
Winthrop will be back in action on Saturday, Mar. 3 at 6 p.m. when it faces the 11
th-ranked Arizona State Dun Devils at Surprise Stadium.
