ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop Eagles will return to the baseball diamond on Wednesday evening as it travels to Charleston to face The Citadel Bulldogs at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
This will be the Eagles second midweek contest this week as they picked up an 8-6 win over the Valparaiso Crusaders on Monday night in Rock Hill. Winthrop enters the contest with a 3-14 overall record, while the Bulldogs are currently 7-8 on the season. The Citadel plays in the Southern Conference.
The Eagles are led by head coach
Tom Riginos, who is in his second season with the program and holds a 30-44 career coaching record. Winthrop is led offensively by
Justin Hopper with a .278 average at the plate and two home runs.
Matt Lobacz has driven in a team-high 14 runs on the season to go with his 23 total bases.
Tyler Klitsch posts a team-leading 2.42 ERA in 26.0 innings pitched on the season, while
Eric Ruth,
Matt Pierpont and
Michael Gilroy has one win each on the mound.
Preston Johnson and
Austin Stuart both have one save each.
The Bulldogs are coached by Fred Jordan, who currently is in his 21
st season at The Citadel. He holds a career record of 693-516. The Bulldogs' offense is led by Justin Mackert with a .339 average, four home runs, 17 RBI and 40 total bases. James Reeves has a team-high three wins on the season for The Citadel, while Austin Pritcher has tossed a team-best 25.2 innings. Bryce Hines' 1.00 ERA is best on the season, and Zach Sherrill and TJ Clarkson posts two saves each on the season.
Clarkson is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Bulldogs, while Winthrop will send
Mitchell Knox out to the mound.
The Eagles lead the all-time series, which began on Mar. 31, 1988, over The Citadel 21-19 and 11-9 when playing in Charleston. Winthrop won the first all-time meeting 14-2 in 1988, but the Bulldogs won the last meeting in the series 7-4 on May 4, 2011 in Charleston. The two teams have played each other three times each of the last two seasons.
