Baseball Entertains The Citadel At Home On Wednesday Night

Matteo D’Angelo Will Get The Start On The Mound For Winthrop

ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop baseball team will host The Citadel Bulldogs on Wednesday evening at The Winthrop Ballpark in its final midweek contest of the week. Game time is set for 6 p.m.

This game is a make-up of the Mar. 15 contest in Rock Hill that was postponed because of rain.

The Eagles go into the matchup with a 14-14 overall record after seeing their four-game winning come to an end with a 12-6 loss to the 7th-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels on Tuesday night in Chapel Hill. It was the second time this season that Winthrop had faced a team ranked in the top 10 nationally. The Eagles took on then-No. 1 Florida on Mar. 22-23 in Gainesville, FL.

The Bulldogs are currently 10-18 overall this season after being swept this past weekend in three games to the Georgia Southern Eagles in Southern Conference play.

This will be the second meeting of the season between the two teams, as Winthrop defeated The Citadel 3-1 in Charleston on Mar. 16. The Eagles used two first inning RBI's from Brett Thomas and Matt Lobacz, and a Cam Walters RBI single in the sixth inning to hold onto their first win over the Bulldogs since the 2009 season.

Winthrop, offensively, is lead by Eddie Rohan with a .380 average, 19 RBI and 51 total bases. Adam Gliebe still remains the team-leader with two home runs on the season and 107 at-bats. The Eagles now have nine players on their rosters with 10 RBI or more on the season. Three Winthrop pitchers, Tyler Mizenko, Matteo D'Angelo and Eric Ruth, have three wins on the mound in 2011, while Robert Lake has tossed a team-high 43.2 innings. Mizenko continues to leads the starters with a 3.73 ERA, while Tommy Lawrence has a team-low ERA for relievers at 3.38.

The Bulldogs are led at the plate by Joe Jackson with a .318 average, while Nick Orvin posts a team-best five home runs and 53 total bases. Justin Mackert has driven in 21 runs on the season. Austin Pritcher's three wins on the mound tops the pitching staff with a 3-3 record, and TJ Clarkson has a team-low 3.09 ERA. Pritcher also leads The Citadel with 40.2 innings pitched on the season.

The Eagles lead the all-time series over The Bulldogs 21-17, which includes the 3-1 win earlier this season. Winthrop also holds a 10-9 advantage in games played at The Winthrop Ballpark. The Citadel won both games in Rock Hill last season over the Eagles 10-8 on Apr. 7 and 10-4 on May 18.

After the contest Wednesday night with the Bulldogs, the Eagles will step back into Big South action hosting the UNC Asheville Bulldogs this weekend. Game times are Friday at 6 p.m., Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
