ROCK HILL, SC –
The Winthrop baseball team dropped a 4-3 decision to the 25th-ranked Charlotte 49ers on Tuesday evening in non-conference action at The Winthrop Ballpark.

The Eagles fall to 19-23 on the season, while the 49ers improve to 32-9 overall.

“I liked the way our minds were today and thought we were ready to play,” said head coach Tom Riginos. “I thought we battled. Wade Newman did an outstanding job tonight. He picked us up and gave us a chance to win. I was real proud of Wade coming in and battling.”

Charlotte struck first with a run in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead over Winthrop. Justin Wilson began the game with a triple into the right center field gap and then came home in the next at-bat as Shane Basen drove him in on a RBI sacrifice fly to center field.

The Eagles responded in the bottom of the first scoring two runs against Yermal and took a 2-1 lead. Cam Walters led off the inning with a double down the right field line and Tyler Cook followed reaching on an error by Basen at third base. Both runners then advanced a base on a wild pitch by Yermal, and Walters would score when Matt Lobacz hit into a double play. Chas Crane then brought home Eddie Rohan with his two-out RBI single to right field. Rohan walked after Cook reached on the fielding error.

The 49ers regained the lead at 4-2 in the fourth after plating three runs in the inning. The top of the fourth was highlighted by a two-run home run to left field by Miguel Rodriguez. Cory Tilton started the inning with a double down the left field line, and then stole third base and scored on a throwing error by Austen Barber down to third.

Rohan trimmed Winthrop's deficit to one run at 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning when he singled home Leighton Daniels with two outs. Daniels reached on a leadoff walk and advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Walters and a groundout by Cook.

The Eagles were led offensively by Rohan with a 2-for-3 performance and had one RBI along with Crane. Tilton posted a team-high three hits for Charlotte, while Rodriguez drove in two runs with his homer.

Winthrop will be back in action on Saturday, Apr. 30 as it will host the Mercer Bears in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. It will be the first two games of a three-game series against the Bears in Rock Hill.
