Mitchell Knox Winds Up To Pitch

Walters’ Walk Off Single Gives Winthrop 3-2 Win Over Charleston Southern

Eagles Record Fourth Walk Off Win Of The Season

Box Score

ROCK HILL, SC –
Cam Walters picked up his second walk off hit of the season on a one-out single in the bottom of the tenth inning as the Winthrop Eagles earned a 3-2 victory over the Charleston Southern Buccaneers in game one of a three-game series on Friday evening at The Winthrop Ballpark.

The Eagles improve to 19-20 on the season and 9-7 in conference play, while the Buccaneers fall to 20-22 overall and 7-9 in the Big South.

Mitchell Knox (3-1) pitched a career-high 5.0 innings of relief in the opener and earned the win allowing no runs on five hits, one walk and three strikeouts. Stew Brase (3-6) took the loss throwing 9.2 innings and gave up three runs (one earned) on four hits, four walks and two strikeouts.

Mitchell Knox was unbelievable tonight,” said head coach Tom Riginos. “He really did a lot for us. That was probably one of his best outings.”

The bottom of the tenth inning started for Winthrop with a leadoff walk to Brett Thomas, and then saw Justin Hopper come in to pinch-run for him. He moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Adam Gliebe and then to third on an infield single by TJ Olesczuk. Hopper was thrown out at home when Tyler Cook reached on a fielder's choice, but Olesczuk did move up to second base. Olesczuk scored the game-winning run on the single by Walters.

Charleston Southern picked up a run in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead when Tom Burkett scored on a wild pitch by Eagle starter Tyler Mizenko. Burkett reached on a one-out single and then proceeded to steal second and third base.

Thomas recorded the first Winthrop hit in the bottom of the second on a one-out double into the right center field gap. He moved to third when Max Vogel reached on an error and came home on a wild pitch by Brase. Vogel later scored when Cook was caught in a rundown attempting to steal second base. The Eagles took a 2-1 lead in the second inning after plating the two runs.

The Buccaneers tied the contest up at 2-2 in the top of the fifth on a RBI double down the left field line by Jaren Sustar. Brantley Meier came home on the double after he singled to right field and advanced to second on a groundout by Burkett.

The walk off win by Winthrop was the fourth this season, three of which have come in Big South Conference play.

“I thought we swung the bat better than the line score looks,” Riginos said. “We squared some balls up quite a few times right at them, and they made some nice defensive plays. We got the right hits at the right time tonight.”

Walters, Thomas, Olesczuk and Cook all had one hit apiece to lead the Eagles offensively, while Walters drove in the lone RBI. Meier, Burkett and Alex Tomasovich each recorded two hits for Charleston Southern, and Sustar drove in one run.

The two teams will wrap up their three-game series on Saturday, Apr. 23 with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
