Baseball Swept By Radford In Doubleheader Finale

RADFORD, VA –
The Winthrop baseball team wrapped up a three-game series with the Radford Highlanders on Sunday afternoon getting swept in a doubleheader finale at RU Baseball Stadium. The Eagles fell by scores of 7-4 and 5-4.

Winthrop falls to 18-19 on the season and 8-7 in Big South play, while the Highlanders improve to 21-14 overall and 7-5 in conference play.

In game one, Mark Peterson (3-1) picked up the win tossing 5.1 innings and gave up three runs (two earned) on seven hits, five walks and two strikeouts. Robert Lake (2-3) took the loss surrendering five runs on seven hits, two walks and three strikeouts in 4.0 innings of work. Abram Williams (9) earned the save pitching 1.0 scoreless inning on no hits, two walks and one strikeout.

The Eagles struck first with one run in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Matt Lobacz provided the RBI with a one-out RBI single to left field that scored Chas Crane. Crane reached on a fielder's choice and moved to third base on a double to right center field by Eddie Rohan.

Winthrop added to its lead at 2-0 in the third inning when Crane came home on another double to right center field by Rohan. Crane went to third on the hit and then came home on a fielding error by Cory Turner in right field.

Radford responded to take a 4-2 lead after plating four runs in the bottom of the third. The inning was highlighted by a three RBI double by Alex Guerra with two outs. Matt Mack also contributed a bases loaded walk to score the first run of the inning.

The Highlanders increased their advantage to 5-2 with an RBI single by Matt Hillsinger in the fourth inning.

The Eagles trimmed the deficit to two runs at 5-3 with one run in the top of the fifth when Patrick Gamblin drove in Cam Walters on his RBI sacrifice fly to center field. Walters led off the inning with a single to right field, and moved to third when Rohan was hit by a pitch and Lobacz walked.

Radford went back up by three runs at 6-3 on a two-out RBI single by Zach Costello, but then Gamblin made it a 6-4 contest with his second home run of the season over the right field fence.

Cory Turner's RBI double in the bottom of the seventh made it a 7-4 game for the Highlanders. Hillsinger scored on the double as he started the inning with a double to left center field.

Rohan and Brett Thomas led Winthrop offensively in game one with two hits apiece, while Gamblin had two RBI. Hillsinger and Costello posted three hits each for Radford, and Guerra had three RBI.

In game two, Jason Patten (3-1) threw 2.0 innings of relief and allowed one run on three hits, no walks and one strikeout to pick up the win. Eric Ruth (5-1) took the loss pitching 2.2 relief innings and gave up one run on two hits, three walks and one strikeout. Williams (10) picked up his second save of the day surrendering no runs on two hits, no walks and one strikeout in 1.0 inning of work.

The Highlanders jumped ahead of the Eagles 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning on a solo home run by Guerra to right field. The long ball by Guerra was his fourth of the season.

Guerra recorded his second homer of the game, a two-run shot, with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Mack, who made it to first on a bunt single, would come home on the homer by Guerra. Radford went ahead 3-0 after the two runs in the fourth.

Winthrop tied the game up at 3-3 in the top of the sixth led by a two RBI single to right center field by Adam Gliebe. TJ Olesczuk also added an RBI single following the hit by Gliebe. Lobacz reached on an error by Guerra at third and a double by Gamblin, and both would score on the single by Gliebe. Gliebe came home on the hit by Olesczuk.

The Highlanders regained the lead 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning on a RBI double to right center field by Ryan Burgess with two outs against Ruth. Mack would score on the double as he reached on a bunt single against D'Angelo and went to second when Guerra drew a walk.

Winthrop answered back with a run of its own in the seventh and tied the contest at 4-4 on an RBI sacrifice fly by Rohan, but Radford came back and went ahead 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh on Mack's RBI infield single with two outs.

Four different Eagle hitters had two hits in the finale, and Gliebe drove in a team-high two RBI. Mack posted three hits for the Highlanders, while Guerra had three RBI.

Winthrop will be back in action on Tuesday, Apr. 19 as it will travel to Winston-Salem, NC to face the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
