Baseball Rallies To Defeat Wake Forest 6-5 In 10 Innings

Olesczuk Scores Winning Run On Error In The Tenth Inning

Box Score

ROCK HILL, SC –
TJ Olesczuk scored the game-winning run on a throwing error with one out in the bottom of the tenth inning as the Winthrop Eagles scored a 6-5 victory over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons on Wednesday night at The Winthrop Ballpark.

The Eagles improve to 18-16 on the season, while the Demon Deacons fall to 13-21 overall.

Eric Ruth (5-0) earned the win in relief tossing 1.2 scoreless innings on no hits, two walks and one strikeout. Daniel Marrs (0-1) took the loss as he pitched one-third of an inning and gave up one run (no earned) on one hit, no walks and one strikeout.

Marrs started the bottom of the tenth by striking out Brett Thomas before giving up a double to right field by Olesczuk. A wild pitch moved Olesczuk to third base, but a wild throw over the head of Carlos Lopez at third base by catcher Brett Armour allowed him to score the winning run.

“That was a huge hit by Olesczuk there in the tenth,” said head coach Tom Riginos. “He was aggressive on the base paths and the catcher made a mistake which brought in the run.”

Winthrop was down to its last out in the bottom of the ninth inning when Eddie Rohan tied the game up at 5-5 with his RBI single to left field that brought home Cam Walters. Walters singled to right field with one out in the inning and then stole second base.

“Eddie is the guy that you want up in that situation,” Riginos said. “The game always comes back to you. We had a runner on first and second base in the seventh that could have done some damage and he popped it up. He kept his head in the game and the game came back with him. That was a big hit there to tie the game up.”

Rohan produced the first Eagle runs in the third inning with his two RBI triple to the right center field gap to give them a 2-0 lead over Wake Forest. Patrick Gamblin also provided an RBI sacrifice fly that scored Rohan and increased Winthrop's lead to 3-0.

The Demon Deacons trimmed their deficit to 3-1 in the top of the fourth on Conor Keniry's RBI single, but the Eagles answered back with a run of their own in the fifth on an RBI double by Gamblin.

Wake Forest would take a 5-4 lead after plating four runs in the sixth inning. The inning was highlighted by a two RBI single to left field by Mac Williamson, while Lopez and Charlie Morgan also drove in a run each.

It is the third time this season that Winthrop has won a game on a walk off play. Gamblin recorded his first career walk off hit in the Eagles 7-6 10-inning win against VMI on Mar. 19, and Walters also picked up his first walk off hit at Winthrop in a 5-4 victory over UNC Asheville on Apr. 8.

Walters, Rohan and Olesczuk posted two hits each to lead the Eagles offensively, while Rohan drove in a team-best three RBI. Morgan had two hits for the Demon Deacons, and Williamson had two RBI.

Winthrop will be back in action on Friday, Apr. 15 as it will travel to face the Radford Highlanders in the first game of a three-game Big South Conference series. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
