ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop baseball team suffered back-to-back defeats to the Kent State Golden Flashes and Wagner Seahawks on Saturday afternoon at The Winthrop Ballpark. The Eagles fell 13-0 to the Golden Flashes and 8-5 to the Seahawks on day two of the Johnny Gill Memorial.

Winthrop's record falls to 2-4 on the season with the two losses, while Kent State and Wagner improve to 3-2 and 1-2, respectively, with the victories.

In game one, Andrew Chafin (1-0) tossed 5.0 scoreless innings and allowed just three hits, no walks and three strikeouts to pick up the win on the mound. Robert Lake (0-1) took the game one loss for the Eagles surrendering six runs (four earned) on seven hits, two walks and one strikeout in 4.0 innings pitched.

The Golden Flashes jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a two RBI single to right field by David Lyon against Lake.

Kent State then broke the contest open with 10 combined runs in the fourth and sixth innings to go ahead of Winthrop 12-0. Derek Toadvine started the scoring in the fourth inning with an RBI sacrifice fly to center field and Jimmy Rider followed two batters later with a two RBI triple down the right field line. Ben Klafczynski then drove home Rider with his RBI double to right field.

Toadvine scored the first run of the sixth inning on Evan Campbell's RBI double into right center field, and Campbell would later come home on a passed ball. Travis Shaw then plated Rider after an error by Adam Gliebe at shortstop, and Klafczysnki came home on a wild pitch for the fourth run of the inning. Lyon recorded his third RBI of the game with his triple to right center field scoring Shaw, and T.J Sutton's RBI sacrifice fly to center field brought home Lyon for the final run.

Joe Koch made it a 13-0 game in favor of the Golden Flashes when he scored on an RBI groundout by Campbell.

Five different Eagle players recorded one hit each in the doubleheader opener. Campbell and Rider led Kent State offensively with three hits each, while Lyon posted a team-best three RBI.

In the doubleheader finale, a four-run rally by Winthrop in the bottom of the ninth inning was not enough as it fell three runs short to the Seahawks.

Mark Holmes (1-0) earned the win pitching 6.0 innings and gave up one run on six hits, four walks and three strikeouts. Wade Newman (0-1) took the loss throwing 4.1 innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits, no walks and four strikeouts.

The contest was scoreless until Wagner scored two runs in the top of the fourth on an RBI double to left center field by Seth Boyd and Jon Lucas's RBI double down the right field line. The Seahawks would increase their lead to 5-0 in the fifth after an RBI single to right field by Boyd, and Boyd and Joe Conforti scored after Lucas reached on a fielding error.

The Eagles cut their deficit to 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth when Cam Walters reached on an RBI fielder's choice scoring Matt Pierpont.

Wagner responded with three more runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Jack Rice would drive in Kevin McDonnell with his RBI single in the seventh and Gaby Ramirez scored after Connor Abreu reached on a fielding error by Gliebe. Boyd would record his third RBI of the night in the eighth inning with an RBI sacrifice fly plating Ian Miller.
