Box Score

ROCK HILL, SC – Junior pitcher Tyler Mizenko allowed only one hit in a career-high 6.0 innings pitched on Friday afternoon as the Winthrop Eagles opened its 2011 home season with a 9-2 victory over the Wagner Seahawks on day one of the Johnny Gill Memorial.

The Eagles improve their record to 2-2 on the season, while the Seahawks drop to 0-2 overall.

Mizenko did not allow any walks on the afternoon and struck out six batters. The only hit that Mizenko allowed came in the first inning on a single by Eddie Brown. Dale Hering took the loss for Wagner giving up five runs (five earned) on six hits, five walks and three strikeouts in 6.0 innings pitched.

“It was a good game and the guys played well,” said head coach Tom Riginos. “I think Tyler Mizenko really set the tone for us today. He came out and was throwing strikes, and I think that was the biggest thing.”

Winthrop jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning highlighted by a two RBI double down the right field line by Eddie Rohan that scored Tyler Cook and Chas Crane. Crane drove in the other run in the first inning with an opposite-field single that brought in Sean Sullivan.

The Eagles added to their lead at 5-0 in the fourth inning on a RBI single to left field by Adam Gliebe and Brett Thomas scoring on a wild pitch by Hering.

The Seahawks cut the lead to 5-2 in their half of the seventh inning on Gabe Ramirez's two-RBI single to left field off reliever Justin Hopper that plated Seth Boyd and Joe Conforti. Hopper came on in relief of Mizenko in the top of the seventh.

Winthrop answered back with a run of its own in the bottom of the seventh inning when Matt Pierpont reached on a fielding error by Brown at second base which allowed Rohan to score from second base. The Eagles made it a 9-2 game in the eighth inning on an RBI sacrifice fly by Tyler Cook, an RBI single by Rohan to left field and TJ Olesczuk's RBI double to right field. The run driven in by Olesczuk was the first of his career at Winthrop.

“The guys were ready to play today and, for me, that was a positive,” Riginos said. “It's going to be a grind this weekend so we have to come out ready to play.”

Crane, Rohan and Gliebe all finished the contest with two hits each, while Rohan drove in a team-high three RBI. Four different Wagner hitters posted one hit each and Ramirez had two RBI.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 26 with a doubleheader against the Seahawks and Kent State Golden Flashes on day two of the Johnny Gill Memorial. Winthrop will face the Golden Flashes at 12:30 p.m. and Wagner at 4 p.m.
