Baseball Ends West Coast Road Trip With 6-1 Defeat To San Diego State

Eagles Will Host Wagner In Home Opener At 4 p.m. Friday

Box Score

SAN DIEGO, CA – The Winthrop baseball team wrapped up its three-game road trip in the state of California by falling to the San Diego State Aztecs 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

The Eagles fall to 1-2 overall, while the Aztecs improve to 1-2 on the season.

TJ Kendzora (1-0) pitched 6.0 innings and allowed one run on one hit, three walks and three strikeouts to earn the victory on the mound.  Matteo D'Angelo (0-1) took the loss for Winthrop throwing 4.0 innings and gave up five runs (four earned) on seven hits, no walks and one strikeout.

“You have to give credit to their pitcher Kendzora,” said head coach Tom Riginos. “He pitched a really good game and kept us off-balance. We put the ball in play, but it was just right at them.”

San Diego State struck first in the bottom of the third inning posting four runs off of D'Angelo to take a 4-0 lead. Brandon Meredith started the scoring with his RBI single to center field which drove home Jared Hunt, who led off the inning with a double down the right field line. Jomel Torres followed Meredith with an RBI single to center field and Cody Slader highlighted the inning with his two RBI single for the final runs of the inning.

“The third inning really hurt us today,” Riginos said. “We were playing behind all day and that's tough to do.”

In the bottom of the fourth, the Aztecs added to their lead at 5-0 after Tim Zier brought in Brad Haynal from third base on an RBI groundout to second.

The Eagles scored their first run of the contest in the sixth inning after Adam Gliebe scored Tyler Cook's RBI sacrifice fly out to right field.

San Diego State extended its lead back to five at 6-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning when Torres posted an RBI sacrifice fly out to right field that brought home Zier.

Brett Thomas and TJ Olesczuk recorded both hits on the afternoon for Winthrop, while Cook had the lone RBI. Zier, Meredith and Slader had two hits each for the Aztecs, and Torres and Slader drove in two runs apiece.

“I think we competed for all 27 innings and never gave up,” said Riginos. “I thought we played solid defense throughout the whole weekend. That's a plus for us. We swung the bats extremely well in the first two games. We pitched well at times, but at times we didn't. So we have to get better at that.”

The Eagles will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 25 as they will open their 2011 home season with a 4 p.m. contest against the Wagner Seahawks on the first day of the Johnny Gill Memorial.
