Box Score

ROCK HILL, SC –
The Winthrop baseball team was defeated by the Liberty Flames 8-2 on Thursday evening at The Winthrop Ballpark in the first game of a three-game Big South Conference series.

The Eagles fall to 23-28 on the season and 11-14 in the conference, while the Flames improve to 39-15 overall and 19-6 in conference play.

Matteo D'Angelo (7-5) took the loss in the opener throwing 3.0 innings and gave up four runs on six hits, one walk and two strikeouts. Steven Evans (8-2) pitched 8.0 scoreless innings and allowed five hits, two walks and three strikeouts to earn the win on the mound.

“It was the same story tonight,” said head coach Joe Hudak. “We had a bad start and left five guys on base in the first two innings. That's the way it has been for us. We just have to keep going out there and do a better job.”

Liberty jumped out to a 3-0 lead over Winthrop after scoring three runs in the top of the first. Tyler Bream plated Curran Redal and Matt Williams with his two-run single to center field and later came home when Austin Taylor hit into a fielder's choice.

The Flames extended their lead to 8-0 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning after driving in a run in the third, and two runs each in the sixth and seventh innings. P.J. Jimenez brought in Williams with an RBI single in the third inning, and Michael Robertson and Trey Wimmer each posted RBI singles in the sixth. Bream got the scoring started in the seventh inning with his RBI double to left center field and Jimenez followed two batters later with an RBI single to left field.

The Eagles posted two runs in the bottom of the ninth on a two RBI double by Tyler Cook to left center field. Adam Gliebe and Tyler McBride scored on the double by Cook after Gliebe started the inning with a single to left field and moved to second base on a single by McBride.

Cook and Chas Crane led Winthrop offensively with two hits apiece, while Cook had two RBI. Williams and Jimenez both recorded three hits for Liberty in the contest, and Bream drove in a team-high three RBI.

The Eagles and Flames will resume their series on Friday evening with a 6 p.m. matchup.
