ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop baseball team fell in its final midweek game of the season to The Citadel Bulldogs 10-4 on Tuesday evening at The Winthrop Ballpark.
The Eagles fall to 23-27 overall, while the Bulldogs improve to 35-20 on the season.
Dom Patterozzi (0-5) took the loss throwing 1.1 innings and allowed four runs on four hits, two walks and no strikeouts. Austin Pritcher (3-3) hurled 2.0 innings and gave up one run (none earned) on one hit, one walk and no strikeouts to pick up the win.
“The club that was out there tonight was not anywhere close to the team that was at VMI,” said head coach Joe Hudak. “For us not to bring our “A” game all the time is inexcusable.”
The Citadel posted four runs in the top of the second to take a 4-0 lead over Winthrop. David Greene got the scoring started with his RBI double down the left field line and Grant Richards followed with an RBI single to center field. Nick Orvin drove in the other two runs with a double to left field two batters later.
The Eagles brought home a run in their half of the second inning when Chas Crane scored on a throwing error by Bryan Altman attempting to turn a double play. Crane reached base after leading off the second with a walk.
The Bulldogs extended their lead to 9-1 heading into the eighth inning after plating two runs in the fourth and three in the seventh. Matt Simonelli drove in both runs in the top of the fourth on his two RBI double down the right field line while Altman, Richards and Justin Mackert had RBI's in the seventh inning.
Patrick Gamblin made it a 9-3 game with a two-run homer, his sixth of the season, over the left center field fence in the bottom of the eighth, but The Citadel responded with a run in the top of the ninth when Brad Felder drove home Richards with an RBI fielder's choice.
Winthrop added one run in the bottom of the ninth inning on Sean Sullivan's RBI single to center field with two outs. Tyler Donovan, who started the inning with an infield single, scored on the base hit by Sullivan.
Crane, Gamblin, Sullivan and Matt Thielepape each posted two hits for the Eagles offensively, while Gamblin had a team-high two RBI. Orvin led the Bulldogs at the plate with a 4-for-5 performance and was one of three players to drive in two runs each.
Winthrop will back in action on Thursday, May 20 as it hosts Liberty at 6 p.m in the final conference series of the season.
