ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop baseball team dropped a 3-1 decision to the Canisius Golden Griffins on the final day of the Johnny Gill Memorial, Sunday afternoon at The Winthrop Ballpark.
The Eagles fall to 9-5 on the season, while the Golden Griffins improve their record to 10-5 with the win.
“It's disappointing,” said head coach Joe Hudak. “We're real frustrated right now offensively, all of us are. I don't know what it is. We just have to keep working hard and figure out a way to score some runs.”
Chris Cox (1-0) earned the victory on Sunday after pitching 5.2 innings and gave up one run on six hits, one walk and three strikeouts. Dom Patterozzi (0-1) took the loss surrendering two runs on four hits, two walks and five strikeouts in 4.1 innings pitched. Andrew Van'tWout (2) picked up the save throwing 3.1 innings of scoreless baseball on no hits, one walk and five strikeouts.
Tommy Lawrence finished the game out for Winthrop hurling 4.2 innings and allowed one run on four hits, no walks and a career-high six strikeouts.
“I thought Dom threw well today,” Hudak said. “It's the best he has thrown since he has come back. Tommy Lawrence was lights out. He threw great and that's the way he is capable of throwing.”
Canisius took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning on Shayne Willson's leadoff home run over the left field fence against Patterozzi.
The Eagles responded to tie the game at 1-1 in its half of the fourth when Eddie Rohan came home after Matt Pierpont hit into a double play to the third baseman. Winthrop began the inning with three-straight singles by Rohan, Thielepape and Crane before Pierpont hit into the double play.
The Golden Griffins made it a 3-1 game in the fifth inning after scoring two runs off Patterozzi and Lawrence. Patterozzi struck out Josh Lewyckyj to lead off the fifth and allowed a triple into the left center field gap to Perry Silverman before giving way to Lawrence. Sean Jamieson followed with an RBI single to right field that scored Silverman. Jamieson later came home on Steve McQuail's RBI single.
Rohan and Tyler Donovan both had two hits apiece for the Eagles on the afternoon, while Thielepape and Crane both had one hit. Jamieson, Willson and Drew Pettit posted two hits apiece for Canisius.
Winthrop will be back in action on Tuesday, Mar. 16 as it hosts the Harvard Crimson at 5 p.m.
