ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop baseball team has selected three players to serve as its team captains for the 2011 campaign, which begins Feb. 18-20 against the San Diego State Aztecs and San Diego Torros.
Seniors Robert Lake (Prosperity, SC) and Eddie Rohan (Youngstown, OH), and redshirt-junior Sean Sullivan (Columbia, SC) were selected by their teammates as captains for the 2011 season.
Lake is coming off a 2010 season in which he led the Eagles with two complete games, and posted a 6-5 mark on the mound with a 5.07 ERA. He made 15 starts and tossed 94.0 innings allowing 65 runs (53 earned) on 105 hits, 23 walks and 72 strikeouts. Robert was named Big South Pitcher of the Week and Southeast Pitcher of the Week by College Baseball Insider for his season-opening 7.0 inning performance against George Mason in The Bojangles Baseball Classic. So far in his three seasons at Winthrop, Lake holds a career record of 13-8 and has appeared in 52 contests with 27 starts.
Rohan enters his senior season just 12 home runs away from setting the all-time career homer record for both the Eagles and Big South Conference. He is a three-time All-Big South selection and has led Winthrop in home runs the last three years. In 2010, Rohan hit .312 with 15 homers and 43 RBI in 57 games played (55 starts). Eddie also led the squad with 13 hit-by-pitches, and tied for the team-lead with three triples. He has played in 173 games in his career and posts a .316 batting average, 135 RBI and 382 total bases.
Sullivan begins his third season as the starter in right field for the Eagles after redshirting as a freshman in 2008. He hit .288 last season with a team-best 233 at-bats in 57 games played with 56 starts. Sean posted a career-high in home runs with six and 34 RBI, and recorded 13 doubles. Sullivan also added 67 hits and 48 runs scored. He recorded 10 consecutive hits during a three-game stretch from Mar. 18-20, 2010, and later posted eight straight hits in back-to-back contests at UNC Asheville. Sullivan received Big South Player of the Week honors for the first time in his career on Mar. 22, 2010. He has played in 127 games during his career and has stolen 20 bases on 25 attempts to go with a .298 batting average.
