Eagles To Compete In Split Meets At Duke, Lynchburg This Weekend

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop men's and women's track and field programs continue their 2025 outdoor season with split meets at Duke and Lynchburg this weekend.

ABOUT THE EAGLES
  • The Eagles opened their outdoor track and field season with a meet in Elon. Winthrop is building off an outstanding fall with a blend of accomplished returners and newcomers with potential
  • Jeremy Falwell Chavis has been named the Interim Head & Track Field Coach
  • The slate includes visits to Elon, Davidson and Lenoir-Rhyne and two visits to Duke during the outdoor season
  • Five of the six regular-season meets will occur in the state of North Carolina as well as the Big South Conference Outdoor Championships at UNC Asheville from May 12-14
  • Winthrop will also host the annual WuPax Invitational from April 18-19 for Senior Day
SEASON AWARDS
  • 4x400 relay team Kendale Cooke, Jurnii Lucas, Kevin Brown, Shane King- Big South Men's Track Athletes of the Week-Feb. 21-23
    • Cooke, Lucas, Brown and King finished runner-up at the USC Invite with a time of 3:13.91, which ranks second in the league this season
  • DeAngelo Brooks-Big South Men's Track Freshman of the Week-Feb. 21-23
    • Brooks set a PR in the 60m dash at the USC Invite with a time of 6.97 to finish 10th overall, marking his highest standing in any event this season
LAST TIME OUT
  • Winthrop had 22 Top 8 finishes at the Davidson Relays Saturday afternoon.
On The Field (Davidson Relays)
  • Junior Johntavia Shaw was runner-up in the women's discus throw with a toss of 42.89m while freshman Madison Washington was 3rd in the same event with a hurl of 41.52m
  • Shaw also placed 6th in the women's hammer throw with a toss of 47.92m
  • In the women's shot put, freshman Emily Hartsoe was 6th with a mark of 12.00m
  • In the men's triple jump, junior Maurion Jamison finished 3rd with a mark of 14.28m
  • In the women's triple jump, junior Faith Wood was 3rd with a mark of 11.51m
On The Track (Davidson Relays)
  • In the men's 100m dash, senior Jonquez Webb placed 6th with a time of 10.69
  • In the men's 110m hurdles, freshman Wathen Montgomery placed 7th with a time of 15.39
  • Sophomore Shane King and freshman DeAngelo Brooks both had Top 8 finishes in the men's 200m dash, with King placing 4th and Brooks finishing 8th
  • In the women's 200m dash, sophomore Jade Reese was 8th with a time of 25.39
  • In the men's 400m dash, senior Kevin Brown, junior Jurnii Lucas, and freshman Kendale Cooke all finished in the Top 8
  • Senior Noah Woodbury won the men's 3000m steeplechase with a time of 9:56 while senior Nolan Weisdorfer finished 6th in the same event with a time of 10:37
  • In the women's 3000m steeplechase, freshman Ella Collins and sophomore Alexis Taylor finished 3rd and 4th, respectively, just 11 seconds behind each other
  • Four Eagle relay team placed in the Top 8
  • The most noteworthy was the men's 4x100 relay team finishing in 3rd with a time of 41.86
  • The team consisted of sophomore Shadrach Nvodjo, junior Reggie Grant, junior Carlos Frank Jr. and King
On The Field (Braves Classic)
  • In the women's discus throw, junior Johntavia Shaw won the event with a hurl of 44.16m, while freshman Madison Washington, freshman Emily Hartsoe, and sophomore Maddie Spenner each placed 3rd, 4th, and 6th, respectively
  • Shaw also won the women's hammer throw with a toss of 49.61m, while Spenner and Hartsoe placed 4th and 7th, respectively
  • Shaw then took home her third win of the day in the women's shot put with a mark of 13.51m
  • Hartose, Spenner and Washington again finished in the Top 8
  • Sophomore Briana Breau won the women's javelin throw with a toss of 39.69m
  • This was a new school record
  • In the men's hammer throw, senior Devin Chavis, junior Timothy Speaks and freshman Logan Ruehl each finished in the Top 8
  • In the men's javelin throw, freshman Gabriel Little was runner-up with a heave of 47.43m
  • In the men's shot put, Speaks was 4th with a mark of 13.67m
