Tim Perry,
Mike Napolitano,
Ryan Miller and
Dan Gueldner are joining the Winthrop Baseball coaching staff, head coach
Mike McGuire announced on Tuesday.
Â
"I am very excited about the staff I've been able to assemble here at Winthrop," said McGuire. "It is a very experienced staff with contacts and the ability to recruit nationwide. But also has a track record of developing players to their fullest potential."
Â
Perry joins the Eagles as the recruiting coordinator/pitching coach while Napolitano will be the hitting coach/catching instructor.
Â
Perry comes to Rock Hill from Coastal Carolina, where he served as the director of player development and analytics for the past three seasons.
Â
Perry returned to the college ranks after serving as the Airport High School baseball coach from 2012 to 2021, where he went 165-96-2 with two state championship appearances in 2013 and 2018. Under Perry, the Eagles won four region championships, four district titles, two lower state titles, and had several of his players go on to play college baseball.
Â
Before his time at Airport, Perry spent 10 seasons coaching at the collegiate level with stops at his alma mater Newberry (2001-02), Lander (2003), UNC Asheville (2004-09), and Temple (2011). This is his second stint in Rock Hill, as he worked as a graduate assistant at in the 2000 season when the Eagles were the defending Big South Conference champions.
Â
"Tim brings a lot of knowledge and experience to our program," McGuire said. "He has been a road warrior on the recruiting trail for Coastal Carolina the last three years and brings a lot of contacts and experience in evaluating talent. He also has worked first hand developing pitchers at a high level. I have no doubt he will make an impact on our pitching staff and our program."
Â
Napolitano comes to Winthrop after three seasons as an assistant coach for the Babson College baseball program in 2023-24. He helped the Beavers to a 48-33 overall record in his first two seasons, coaching eight players who earned All-Conference honors, six who received All-Region accolades and one All-American.
Â
Prior to his time at Babson, Napolitano served as a graduate assistant baseball coach at Misericordia University in Dallas, Pa for two seasons. He served as the hitting and catchers coach in addition to working as the program's recruiting coordinator.
Â
Napolitano recruited more than 30 players to Misericordia in his two seasons as an assistant and coached five all-conference selections and a pair of all-region honorees in 2021 as the Cougars won their 10th consecutive MAC Freedom Conference championship. Misericordia finished the year at 31-10 overall after going 2-2 at the NCAA Tournament St. Paul (Minn.) Regional.
Â
"Mike is a great fit for our program for several reasons," McGuire said. "He is considered one of the top hitting coaches and recruiters in the Northeast. That's a part of the country that our program has got to recruit. His contacts up there will be invaluable for us. Offensively he and I share a lot of similarities and thoughts on swing mechanics and offensive philosophy and approach. Our hitters will benefit greatly from his tutelage."
Â
Casey Schuermann will stay on as an assistant coach.
Â
"I'm excited to keep Casey on staff," McGuire said. "He has made quite an impression on me in the short time I've been here with his work habits, attention to detail and his desire to help build this program to the level it should be."
Â
Miller will be the director of pitching development and Gueldner will be the director of player development.
Â
"
Ryan Miller and
Dan Gueldner are both young guys with the desire and work habits it takes to excel in this profession and both will have big impacts in our program," McGuire said.
Â
Miller joins the Garnet and Gold after serving in the same position at Big South rival Longwood last year. Miller played for the Lancers for one season as a graduate transfer in the spring of 2023. That season he threw the team's first complete game since 2019 in his final collegiate start, and he also earned the win over No. 14 Campbell, the highest ranked win in team history, on April 15.
Â
Prior to Longwood, he pitched for Pittsburgh in 2022 after spending three seasons at North Carolina Central. While at NCCU, he was the MEAC Freshman of the Year in 2019 and the MEAC Pitcher of the Year in 2021. In addition, he was a Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American in 2019 and a Collegiate Baseball Second Team All-American in 2021. The National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association had him as a Third Team All-American that same season.
Â
Gueldner joins the Eagles after serving as the director of baseball operations with Big South rival USC Upstate last season. He previously had interned with the Spartans during the 2023-24 off-season as well as helping with operations at Cleveland S. Harley Park. Prior to Upstate, he interned with the Carolinas Metro Reds, an MLB Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) program based in Charlotte, N.C. With the Carolinas Metro Reds, he assisted with coordinating team camps and player development while gaining experience in social media and content creation.
Â
Serving at both the interscholastic and travel baseball levels, Gueldner has multiple seasons of coaching experience, working with both Showcase Baseball Academy (Charlotte, N.C.) and Nation Ford High School (Fort Mill, S.C.). With Showcase Baseball Academy, he spent two seasons as an assistant coach before being promoted to head coach of the SBA Nationals. With Nation Ford, he worked primarily with the Falcons' infielders while handling bench coach duties on game days.
Â
Eddie Hill will remain as the director of baseball operations.
Â
"I've known
Eddie Hill for some 25-plus years back to his days as the Rock Hill H.S. coach," McGuire said. "Eddie is a good baseball man and handles a lot of day to day operations items within our program and takes some items off my entire staff's plate which allows for more time for the rest of us for player development and recruiting."
