ROCK HILL, SC – Winthrop head baseball coach
Tom Riginos has announced the hiring of Derron Davis as a volunteer assistant coach for the upcoming season.
"It is with great pleasure and excitement to announce the hiring of Derron Davis," Riginos said. "I have been watching Derron's development as a young coach over the last few years and I knew once I had an opening, Derron was my first call. He is such a great fit for my staff. He knows our system and the expectation of our program."
Davis, who played under Riginos in 2016, joins that staff after a season as assistant coach at Northeast Community College. There, he was responsible for coaching the outfielders, recruiting, facilitating practices and game management.
Before joining the coaching staff at Northeast, Davis played a season of professional independent baseball overseas for the Trebic Nuclears of the Czech Republic.
Davis began his collegiate baseball career at McCook Community College where he still holds the record for singles (61), stolen bases (15) and runs (45). He was a First Team All-Region, Academic All-Region and MCC Athlete of the Year in 2015. Davis then played one season as an Eagle. At Winthrop, he recorded a .365 batting average, appearing in 15 games, making four starts. He finished his career at Colorado State University-Pueblo where he recorded a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. During the summers of 2015 and 2016, Davis played for the Medford Rogues of the West Coast League.
"It is an honor to be joining the Winthrop staff," Davis said. "I'm excited to learn from three excellent coaches and work with talented young players. I would like to thank Coach Riginos, Hill, and Monday for allowing me the opportunity to join the staff and once again be a part of this excellent program. I would also like to thank Coach Clapp and Northeast for giving me an opportunity to begin my college coaching career at a great program. I cherished every moment in a Winthrop uniform as a player and I will do the same as a coach. I believe this is a program that will continue to rise and see success and I'm excited to be back in the city of Rock Hill. Looking forward to the success we are going to have here at Winthrop. Go Eagles!"
Davis earned his Associate of Arts from McCook in May 2015 before graduating from CSU-Pueblo with a degree in Psychology in August of 2018. He is currently working towards a Master's degree in Psychology from Grand Canyon University.
